Hi guys, first time ive popped into the Porsche section, so please go easy on me and my lack of knowledge?!

I quite fancy a 911 Turbo. I cant afford a 997 considering there close to 100k new and im sure still well over 80k used. SO 996 it would be, used examples now fetching under 40k, which seems a bargain price for a ''supercar''. But are they all what they are cracked up to be?

Im currently driving a year old 335d which is tuned to 340bhp and 530FT-IB. She goes really well to be fair and set a respectable quarter mile time of 13.5@105mph and scares the previous generations of M3's and M5's but im after something REALLY quick. Cue the 996 turbo.

If im right, please do correct me if im wrong the 996 turbo comes with 415bhp as standard? and thre Turbo-s upgrade is 450bhp?! What year did Porsche bring out the 450bhp version? and do they command a significant premium over the standard Turbo?

Regarding residules. Could I buy a 996 turbo and keep it 2-3 years and lose only a minimum? I am thinking they have lost so much already that the prices of decent ones will firm up now?

What are the service intervals and at what cost?

Another big thing is, I love tuning cars. So engine modifying would be a must!!!! Can this be done reliably? What does break? if anything?

What HP can be gained from a Re-map alone? and can the standard engine internals take alot more boost and bigger turbo and intercooler upgrades?

Am i right in saying a stock 996 turbo CAN cover the standing quarter in low 12's at over 115mph?

thanks for any help or input.

Thanks

Carlos

p.s forgot insurance.... Im sure they will rape me.. im only 24 frown

Carlos,

I can't respond on any of the tuning questions. The stock 420 BHP is far more capable than I am. I reach my limits way befor the car does.

£40k - yes, fantastic value for money.

Usual niggles - clutch, discs, rads etc. Just make sure that you get any car inspected and warranteed, as bills can be spectacular.
They drink a bit of oil (1 ltr per 1600km as per the manual), hoover fuel when worked and have a healthy appetite for rear boots.
But hell, are they fun!

good luck with finding a good one, there are lots out there, so take your time to find the right one.

They're damn near bulletproof. 600hp is safe as kittens, and you'll be low 11's at over 126mph. Ask me how I know wink

Good luck, they're IMO the best sports car out there bar none.

here's a good read about the X50: http://www.stevecarter.com/911turbo.htm
here's a good read about a chipped version: http://www.dmsautomotive.com/reviews.asp?gsel=1&am...

Both the TurboS and the X50 pack produce 450hp, although the TurboS was the run-out version in '05 and had a few more bits on it, like carbon composite brakes. Both also used KKK24 Turbo's instead of the standard KKK16.

Tuning wise, with just a remap the standard car is good for around 500ish hp/lb ft torque. The X50 car even more. Stage 1 means you'll be running at around 1 bar of boost. Standard is around 0.6
There are plenty running with this setup with no issues whatsoever - consensus is the car is largely bulletproof (although I didn't say that as I don't want to jinx anyone) smile Note: Simply swapping the exhaust out on the standard turbo will take it up to around 450hp.

Residuals - considering the major depreciation has already come out of the car, I would imagine that further depreciation will be far less painful - of course, it will still occur however.

Service intervals -
Minor (upto/including 03 plate)= 12k or 12mths. 12k/24mths for 04- Cost=£390
Major (upto/including 03 plate)= 24k or 24mths. 24k/48mths for 04- Cost=£1026 (inc plugs)

quarter mile times. not sure, but google/youtube has loads of examples.

Enjoy smile

Superb cars. Had mine for 6 years now, running costs etc on my profile.

A good one is an absolute bargain IMHO.

Tuning wise the internals are OK upto about 580bhp. After that it gets expensive.

Hi thanks for the replies everyone.

Is Nav essential in these cars? does it help with residuals?

What sort of mileage to steer clear from. Considering i will want to tune aswell?! I want a reliable performance turbo!!!! Is it best to steer clear from tracked carS?

the nav question is the same for almost any car. it might not get you a better price, but it will almost certainly help you to sell it quicker.

mileage. the car is majorly understressed. it eats mileage. so long as its serviced properly there is no watershed regarding mileage.

tracked cars can be some of the best cars to own - all depends how theyve been looked after. I would suggest you go and look at some smile
