I thought i would share this with you guys, it's a bit of a mad undertaking but i think we're all a bit mad anyway so here you go, it's long, sorry!

This all started when I detonated my old engine, i was at Brunters on an informal VMax style day with a few other Porsche nutters, TB993tt, MOD500, Ultaviolent, 911Addict and Phelix among others, for a day of blasting up and down the runway. I'd recently fitted a K27HFS turbo, fabspeed backbox, new air intake, and Evo BOV to complement the other mods which included a 964 intercooler, B&B style headers (manifold), ported heads and intake manifold, 964 cams and 1.0bar boost. I knew my warm up regulator was dodgy so i had a Innovate LM1 wide band sensor in the car to keep my eye on my AFR, the first run down the runway and it holed a piston, not a good day I guess, this is what it looked like

And me after the event with smoking engine, think my face says it all

I drove the car back from Brunters to Henley, it takes more than this to stop a porker smile anyhoo, I had a choice to make, do i go all out with this engine, Motec EFI and everything that goes with it? I pondered this over xmas and ended up deciding that the way forward was to fit a 993tt engine as they are basically bullet proof and the tuning world is full of options for this engine. I love the 930, shape, feel, smell, it's the best looking turbo IMO and wanted to keep the silhouette so buying a later car wasn't an option

I found an engine in a breakers yard which was already tweaked (I didn't know this until after i'd bought it), it had K24's fitted, orange injectors, 5.0bar fuel regulator, evo BOV's, solid lifters and sport cams among other stuff. It turned out the turbo's were toast as one of them had been damaged, so I contacted Andy at Fearnsport who supplied me with a pair of fresh K16/24's that were modified to his spec, i'm told they are good turbo's (someone on here is running them but can't remember who).

The exhaust system was also damaged, bent headers and the cats and silencers were shot, the headers were straightened and i bought some cat bypass' and had some 997 sport tips fitted. It looks a bit nuts from the rear, haven't seen it on the ground yet but here's a pic

Some of the major obstacles on getting this engine into a 930 include moving the oil tank and oil lines as the right-hand turbo is in the way, so we fitted a 993tt oil tank in front of the right offside tire

You can imagine the trouble with wiring the thing up, i know nothing about wiring, it's voodoo as far as i'm concerned but Paul up at Northways makes it look easy, Nothways have done all this work BTW, I cannot sing their praises enough, totally professional and honest as the day is long. Ray was a little pissed that Paul took the job on but i'm glad he did, sorry Ray.
Back to the car, then there was the fuel lines and adding another oil cooler, we went with a Setrab unit which took the place of the front AC rad, it already has a fan in there which is now wired to a switch in the front so i can turn it on if things get warm (VMax runs etc), a couple of pics of the install

The biggest obstacle was mating the gearbox to the 993 engine, loads of issues! I'm sticking with the 4 speed until I can find a Ruf CTR 5 speed, or until i'm ready for the hellish job of fitting a G50/50 or 52. Anyway, the starter for a 993 wouldn't fit on the 930 box and the 930 starter would engage the 993 flywheel, a new ring gear was needed and it had to be modified to fit, long winded pain the arse but it worked. Then there was the actuator arm that wouldn't work with the 993 clutch so that had to be sorted, but they managed it. If you are thinking about doing this be aware that it is a pain in the arse but it is possible.

The last thing was the tail, i want to keep the 930 silhouette so fitting a silly rear tail was the last resort, the 993 intercooler is obviously a bit bigger than the 930, this is a pic of it with the 964 intercooler

and with the 993tt one

They managed to move the tail back slightly on the lid and also move the hinge to fit the 993 airbox, this was a bit of a pain as the hinge now goes through the airbox, but it goes through the dirty side of the filter so all is well.

They are just tidying up the wiring and i pick it up tomorrow biggrin It is only to drive it up to Fearnsport though as it is yet to be mapped. Andy should have it for about a week (wishful thinking) and then it's ready for some fun. I just hope it's ready for VMax, and it absolutely HAS to be ready (with a few weeks of driving it) before Le Mans.
Once the car is tuned i will post some dyno results and some pics of it finished, also if it's ready for VMax i'll get some performance data and see what it does 60-130mph etc. I don't think i will be able to go through the beams flat out at VMax as the braking distance is short and i have no ABS, I may be able to get it flat out before the beams though and log it on the AX22, either way it'll be fun! I have further to go with it, it needs bigger brakes, it's currently on 993 calipers up front and the old front turbo calipers in the rear, it really needs big reds which means bigger wheels. It also needs RSR coil over suspension and possibly a half cage and lighter seats, not till the end of the year though!

If anyone is interested in doing this kind of transplant feel free to ask me questions and i'll get you the answers, thanks for looking

Thanks chaps, it's certainly going to be fun, Paul at Northway was out in it today and said it's running beautifully, that is with his stock spare ECU he has for testing, the ECU that came with the engine over boosts and runs like crap. He said even with the stock map it goes like stink, what will it be like with nearly another 100hp!!
He also said it really suits the 4 speed box, I guess with all the torque it doesn't really need to be high in the rev range all the time, probably would be better with 5 or 6 gears on track though.

UV, I've got my name down with Craig for VMax, will be nice to have my car there again, still staggered at your 193mph run, it definitely felt like it had more to give, you'll have to really push it hard this time matey and get up closer to the double ton, it's certainly got the power for it, we'll have to do a side by side run, will be interesting to see how much you pull on me!
We may as well meet at the same services, I'll bell you nearer the time, hope your well mate!

Phelix, it's amazing how quick things get done when you have a proper outfit doing the work, Paul did all this in his spare time between jobs, which included removing and stripping the 930 lump, and having the engine out about 4 times to sort out isuues with the gearbox/clutch/starter!
If anyone wants to know where NOT to take your pork send me a PM, I'll gladly enlighten you!
Are you at this VMax Phelix?

I got the car up to Silverstone without issue, it's not boosting properly, only seeing 0.4bar but it is running nice and smooth . WAY too loud with no mufflers and no cats, here's a clip tractor
Will have some sport cats put in to muffle the noise, looking forward now to getting it back fully tuned and tweaked smile

That would be me.

They are producing over 500 bhp in my car.

I was hoping you'd chime in Ken, so what do you think of them, are they a bit laggy or do they pull all the way from low down, do you feel the power drop off at the top end?
What other stuff have you done with your engine, have you got performance cams in there? What exhaust system etc. Sorry for all the questions smile

Agent, I hope he doesn't have it for months, I want to have it ready before June so I can get to VMax, TBH I'd like to have it back within two weeks but i want it right so he can take his time. I've had the car for a little over 5 years now and it's spent over 2 of them being pulled apart and played with, a year and half of that was totally wasted, hopefully i'll have it with me more often from here on.
If we ever meet anywhere you have to take me for a spin in the GT2, be aware though you'll need a shot gun to get me back out again smile

My engine had a full rebuild by Andy including new barrels & pistons, cams, big ends etc. The new cams are standard, the only upgrades were the turbos and 100 cell cat plus other minor bits like fuel regulator and dump valves. Andy was very surprised when I had it rolling road tested even to the extent we took it to another rolling for for a second opinion. The first test showed 545 bhp, the second was 509 bhp.

It's a lovely engine very smooth. Power delivery is good, it's quite progressive and boost is held right to the top of the rev range.

I had a 996TS with K24's, that had much more lag than the 993.
