porsche 997 S - worth adding K&N induction kit?
Discussion
hi guys
I fitted a K&N on the subaru turbo a few years back, it added a nice rasp to the intake which worked well with the turbo and (felt!!) that the throttle response was improved but never did a dyno comparison
Has anyone fitted one of these to a 997 3.8, or tried something similar? at 311 quid its not the largest sum of money possibly to get an extra 20bhp (claimed...)
cheers

Why not get a Manthey air filter? I think they cost circa 130 quid.
Or if you're looking for an airbox conversion why not have a look at Fabspeed?
I feel compelled to comment on one thing however; view claims of an increase of 20hp with some skepticism. This will not happen with an induction kit alone.

More chance of falling pregnant by post than getting 20 BHP from any induction kit, let alone K&N on any naturally aspirated Porsche.
Best bet is to get a BMC flat panel filter from Grand Prix Racewear. It adds around 1 or 2 BHP and the induction noise is a bit better. Around £60 or so.
An ecu reprogramme on a 997 3.8 S takes it up by around 20 BHP and 18lb-ft the next release of horsepower will come from sports cats and after that free flow headers. Almost nothing to be gained elsewhere.
Cheers

Hello
Fitted one of these to a 996 and it made one hell of a difference in the mid range.
It was a complete induction kit with filter, pipe work every thing included,we were very impressed with its performance...when i spoke to k & N they said if it doesent do what it says on the box we would refund you your money ! never dyno tested the filter but you can definitly feel a difference and the induction roar can only be described as something out of this world.....

If the filter is an oiled type then it needs to be avoided as the oil passing downstream can mess with the MAF sensor... If it is a 'dry' filter, like those being supplied by K&N and others, which are Porsche specific then there are no problems.
The K&N does look good, if a little pricey... US eBay is your friend!

when I had the cone filter for the scooby it was oil based filtering, I'd assume similar with the 997 induction kit. If K&N offer money back if no extra performance is gained then I'd say perhaps it's worth a try....
I'll ring a few and see what the consensus is - thanks for thoughts so far.... if I get one fitted I'll do a dyno before & after and post results
cheers

Hi Scooby, I had one put on my 2009 Gen II Carrera S and it gave me all sorts of of problems with the engine management system, including a fault 'Transmission emergency run' along with numerous others regarding air input.
I had the faults cleared and the original air box put back on and it's fine. My advice is - Don't do it!

Whereas conversely I own the 996 that Mike (sportsandclassic) referred to above, it's been on over 5 years and works really well - the car's never had or needed a MAF replacement either in at least 6 years. Maybe it depends who fits it or whether the car's completely healthy beforehand. I had the faults cleared and the original air box put back on and it's fine. My advice is - Don't do it!
