I got a boxster s a few month ago & am also a keen cyclist...

This is my only car & i cannot think of getting rid of any of my 2 passions.

ie: i want to carry my bike on (with) the car....
well go out at the week-ends with my girl-friend & the bikes...

I did not yet buy the roof transport system yet as it looks a bit unpractical to put-on & remove (???) => does someone actually own one?

As a temporary solution i bought a Dahon folding bike (which is the closest riding experience to a normal road-mountain bike).

I was looking at a boot carrier, but found nothing adequate: looked at 'classic carriers' (boot carrier) in the netherland but had bad feedback on their products...

Had anyone else gone through the same process???

Regards,
Eric.

I would try a search on Boxa.net. It has loads on the roof transport system.

I have seen them on the car but have not tried one myself. I carry my bikes in my truck to events (triathlons)...

Here's one guy I know who goes everywhere in his Turbo!

You could try www.roofbox.co.uk - if there's a way of doing it they will know.

I've no experience or knowledge of Boxster carrying systems but whatever you get have a good practise first.

It's so tempting to think nice day, phone a mate and go........I've heard too many horror stories about bikes flying off carriers on motorways

I always try and load my bike with plenty of time and fuss and obsess about all the straps. If something can fly off wave about or go horribly wrong it will. Think about how you protect both the bike and the car. Rags bungees and old inner tubes are good for padding and securing things.

On a practical point if you're going off road are you sure you want to leave your car in a secluded car park with bike racks advertising that you'll be away for a long time. You can never take enough rags plastic bags and bay wipes. I hope you've got black leather because I guarantee you will leave a horrible mark somewhere.

Nice to hear another PHer is into (push)bikes. Most bikers I know are mad about cars but most petrolheads assume bikers are all beardy wierdies.

Hello Oddman,

You' d be surprised!
Lots of car nuts are cyclists too...
They are just more discreet than the non-cyclist ones.

We had lots of cycling chats on the Lotus Elise board... (i used to have an Elise)...

Given what you said i may well stick to folding bikes when i use my car....

The dahon speed-pro (24 speeds) would make a nice complement to my car (not the color though... it is bright orange...)......

Txs for the info anyway... i see exactly what you mean by being carefull...
Eric.

I have a Boxster S and a pushbike too. I commute on the bike in the week and save the Porsche for weekends. An unusual way round to have it I'm told.

I have been thinking about the roof transport system but am worried about it marking the car...

So I'm afraid I can offer no help - bu I am very interested to hear how you get on with your chosen solution.

Re being into bikes & cars - I find most people are either into balls or wheels (with notable exceptions) - ie most car mad mountain bikers don't really follow football or rugby and most soccer nuts don't go motor racing or follow the TdF...

Eric we have something in common. I too owned an Elise and have switched to a Boxa.

Mountain biking, football, cars & chicks are all a passion - please tell me you have a hard top or something, as i am not convinced a roof rack would be much kop on my rag top!!

I have tried to many times to fit the frame in the front............but with no joy!! best of luck and please let me know how you get on.

Hello SVG.... & all the others....

Good to hear we are not alone.

In fact i like everything that has wheels!

I am even into inline skating & did a few marathons on them...

NOW regarding the Boxster & the bikes, a few points:
*SVG, you do not need the hard-top for the boxster-roof-system on your car (cost between GBP 300 & 400).
You can remove-it-put-it in about 10 minutes BUT will have to leave the black-plastic attach to the car (which are ugly).

*Otherwise there are the boot carrier mentionned above in this thread.

*MY CHOICE....not sure everyone will like it but... www.dahon.com/ do relatively good looking folding bikes that would fit in the front boot (need to remove the wheels but easy with quick-release though).
Look for the Dahon SPEED PRO that rides like a proper road bike (seriously!).

I got the speed D6 for the time being & completed a few 50 miles rides on it @ a relatively good pace.

+ it means nothing 'ON' the car that may bump-scratch it..

Voila...
Eric.

That's a clever solution, Eric. I might have to go take a look. And you say it fits in the front boot? What wheel size did you get? 20" or 26"?

Some good points raised and info gained.

Folding bikes are not for me - just bought an Orange Sub 5 mountain bike and I would like to keep it rigid!!

I suppose i could cut it in half and put a few hinges on it though!!

Thanks

Don,

Go for the 20 inch wheels model check the SPEED-PRO model => it is the 1 to go for.

You will have to remove the wheels to fit in the Box S though!

The 26 inch wheel model would not fit a boxster boot anyway.

BTW, i do same as you => commute by bicycle during the week (when not raining...) or by scooter.

+ keep the car for the w-end...

SVG,
you are right folding bikes are crap in general (i would not sit on a Brompton!).
But Dahon' s are very different animals...

If you are into road cycling, the SPEED-PRO (GBP 599) or Helios XX (GBP 1000 limited edition with shimano dura-ace gear, Rolf wheels, carbon bits) will defnitely suit you...

If you are a 'pure' mountain bike rider... then walk on by... nothing to see there....

Otherwise my other bike is a Cannondale Bad-Boy Ultra...next one will be a proper Road Bike (Cannondale R1000 or so...).

Regards,
Eric.

PS: there is another make of 'good' folding bikes called 'Airnimal' which have very good road bikes with 26' wheels that *may* fit the boxster' s front boot when folded (not 100% sure though). They are based in Cambridge.... & they are *VERY* expensive!
