These are the cameras that overhang the entire width of the carriageway and look like there mounted on scaffolding.

I was looking for details of how these work, do they scan forward & catch drivers from a few miles away or do you need to drive underneath them to get caught speeding?

I was driving down to Munich yesterday afternoon & didn’t slow down in time from a derestricted part to the 120/80 kph speed limit signs.

I didn't get flashed but also didn’t slow down in time for the speed limit signs & these cameras could have captured me from a distance.

Has anybody had any experiences with these?

Many Thanks

If you mean the big white ones that scan the whole carriageway (rather than little black ones by electronic speed signs), then I understand they are to check number plates, not speed.

You get these on de-restricted parts of the autobahn and all the german cars drive past them at full speed.

the ones on the A3, on that big downhill bit?

i don't know of any others like that, perhaps the truck toll cameras

edit: normally, you didn't get flashed (in the face), you didn't get caught

These were positioned quite regally on the roads.

First there would be a 120kph limit sign
Then an 80kmph sign

Followed a bit further down the road with a scaffolding type gantry overhanging the width of the road. On these, positioned above each lane was a box with blanked out, black type glass. I couldn't be sure if these were angled down/ straight or both. The gantry was silver.

I can go out tonight & look for them & stop and take a picture if that would help.

Cheers

That sounds like the HGV road toll system. You can (sometimes) spot the red lens of the speed cameras when they are fitted to the speed limit gantrys.

Yep, the huge gantry systems with 5 or more cameras pointing at you as you approach monitor the lorries using the roads. I thought they were speed cameras but realised they weren't when a German plate RS4 went through at about 150mph biggrin

except the ones i mentioned on the A3, north of frankfurt

three gantries one after the other, two of them with speed cameras, one camera per lane

80 kph in the outer two lanes, 40 in the inside lane for trucks

that might be classed as 'taking the piss' a bit in an 80kmh zone

185 mph in a 50?

The big white boxes are only for trucks: it is part of the system that calculates taxes for truck using motorways, nothing to do with radars!

In Germany, I suggest you to follow the speed limits! If speed is not limited, enjoy it! But if there is a speed limit, controls are done...be carefull!

I would add the common sense part to that. Just because you are on a derestricted section does not excuse you from driving in accordance with the traffic around you. Don't just bury the loud pedal because there is no limit like those maniacs in Audis, only go large when the road is yours...

As the Autobahn swung round a corner, I was facing a long down hill straight piece of road, it must have been at least 4 or 5 miles in length with no other cars in the distance. This was the safest piece of road I had encountered since leaving Spa on Monday morning. I didn't pass any other cars & was quite surprised that there was a speed limit along the section. I started to slow down when I saw the speed limit signs but wasn't going to slam on the brakes, not from this speed & so I slowed down gradually.

I might add that about half an hour earlier, I was driving behind a police car, this time with the odd bit of traffic around us that was cruising along around 150mph. Both the Police car & I were traveling at 170mph at the time, only 20mph more than the cars we were passing.

You need to look at the speed of the traffic in context with the average speed of all the cars. When I slowed down to go to the services, 80mph seemed a lot more dangerous that 180mph...

it really does sound like that bit on the A3 just north of Frankfurt, quite a distance from Munich, but it's a 100 limit

it's only got that limit because the trucks in the inside lane are restricted to 40kmh (because it's such a long downhill)

I think that the boxes on the pictures are radars!

It's not the same as the white boxes for trucks!

It is true that even with no speed limit, we have to drive carefully. In Germany, your speed is very often limited by the traffic! Driving at 70 - 80mph is frequent, even is the speed is not limited. Depends where you are and when (8-9 AM, or 5-6PM = worse)...
