I am thinking of changing my trusty 944S2 for a 964, What are the running costs like? how easy are they to maintain? What do I need to look for ? What price do good ones start at ?

You will love it, but the 964C2 isn't the best Porsche ever made. I think it is a step forward from the 3.2, but is more agricultural than a 993. If you can't afford a good one, don't get one. Spend your money on the best 3.2 despite the more modern feel.

Running costs aren't the cheapest - they had manually adjusted tappets so not as cheap as 993s and some things do go wrong on them like the infamous dual mass flywheels etc etc. Search the Porsche section of this site as I'm sure Dr Alex did some kind of buying guide on these. I'd budget at least 2k a year for regular servicing and tyres (they eat rears), oil and brake pads etc. (excluding insurance).

993 and 3.2 will be cheaper to run, like for like.

What do you need to look for? An inspector near you, who can check it out. We could offer all sorts of advice about clutch pedal feel etc but at the end of the day nothing beats an inspection for peace of mind. Ask a local Porsche garage or independent; get it driven to them if the techs don't come out. Genuine sellers with nothing to hide shouldn't mind.

Prices start at about 10k for LHD and 14k for RHD, but these may need stuff doing on them. There is no hard and fast rule. A high mileage LHD car with everything replaced for 12k may be better than a low mileage RHD dog at 16k. Go and look at a few, get a feel for them, avoid the suspiciously cheap ones and keep a look out in Porsche Post (PCGB mag) and 911 and Porsche World. Then if one sounds good at a reasonable price, arrange inspections etc. - maybe graba tech for a day and see three or four.

I ran a 964C2 for a couple of years. It was a really well sorted car, LHD, sold it for (if I recall correctly) £13800 or so with c.120 000 kms on the clock. I got it checked out by an OPC - they did a full check on the car for not a lot of money (about £120 from memory).

I would budget £2000 a year as domster suggested. You may spend less, but one year you may get hit with a dual mass flywheel and clutch letting go.

If you do get one, make sure you get the distributor venting kit installed (don't ask - just get the garage to do it if it hasn't been done) - doesn't cost much but it will save you lots of money compared with an engine going pop.

Whilst there are many scare stories on the 964, certainly the C2 I used to own was a wonderful car and so much fun to drive.

Good luck!

This sort of vehical looks quite good! But am slightly unsure about the process, if any for checking the history of the car in germany. The saturday telegrapgh last week reconed that there were large amounts of 964's in Italy for sale???

That is one of the problems of buying LHD cars. The history is much easier to hide, if the seller is unscrupulous.

Joel, selling this one, makes his living selling LHD Porsches so my guess is that he cannot afford to sell lemons or have unhappy customers. I cannot guarantee this, tho'... The best thing to do is have it independently inspected and make sure you check the Fahrzeugbrief (the german V5).
