Hi guys,

Looked at the websites for both these clubs and both look appealing but is there a general agreement on here which is one is the best to join. Want to get in to track days and eventually racing. TIPEC interests me as they have the monthly magazine and offer good member discounts on Porsche related stuff.

If you want to get into track days and racing then Porsche Club GB is the one for you.

You cant get abetter club magazine than the PCGB one, but thats no reason to join a club.

From my expeience Tipec is less elitest and rather more friendly

Just read some of the debates held about directors posts at PCGB,some people take themselves far too seriously.

Been a PCGB member for about 7 or 8 years now. Club mag is very good, and they are prob the best organised, lots of events etc.. They are now officially recognised by Porsche UK as well, and there are numerour club discount schemes. That said, they do have a reputation for being a bit, ahem, anal, at times. There are some very snotty people there, but they seem to be trying to relax a bit. And to be fair, you could probably get the same in any club. I tend only to go to a couple of events a year, and they are very good. Hedingham in June is probably one of the best events of the year offered anywhere.

I belonged to PCGB for one year.
Found the local club to be mostly full of snobs who weren't interested in speaking to a 944 owner (maybe it's because I live in the South East), so really the mag was the only thing I was getting out of it, and didn't think much of that either.

Plan to join Tipec soon.

Frankly, the independent ones are best, Tipec or Openpitlane for track days, the problem with PCGB is its too welded to Porsche GB to be truly independent as a club. The PCGB magazine is less than a true enthusiast would like, being full of snobs with a greater love of themselves than cars and lots of photos of people presenting awards to each other. Might be your scene but not mine.

If you want a Porsche magazine then Porsche will send you one as big and more interesting than the PCGB one for nothing - its called Christophorus, just phone your Porsche dealer and ask to be added to the list.

I joined the PCGB one and for 60 quid a year IIRC you get a mag each month and a few discounts. I have saver 120 quid this year already being a member from OPC discounts being a member so worth it.

And me

I asked a question on the forum re tyres on a 996 Turbo - I said I had already used the search function in the post yet the first 3 replies were about the search function!!
I was trying to find out if anyone had tried all of the N rated tyres and to compare them.

Most other forums are helpful and people actually read the posts before replying.

That just about sums it up. The magazine is beautifully, and no doubt expensively, produced. However, i found I had read any bits of interest in five minutes. Lots of pictures of guys in dickie bows giving and receiving prizes.

If you like that sort of thing then go for it. They get most of their membership by default as they are the "official" Porsche club.

I joined TIPEC which is 65 quid for TWO years hehe

They keep inviting me to scalextric events, so they can't be stuffy self-important types biggrin

The only good thing about PCGB is you get a 10% discount off servicing and repairs at the OPC's. Apart from that it is truly awful. The magazine is packed full of pictures of people from the various different regions in addition to naff stories about when people met other people who owned Porsches. After a few editions, I never bothered opening the wrapper, except when I ran out of toilet paper.

Definitely not my bag.

In reality you will get the discount just for asking. OPCs will give this out at their discretion to members of any motor club. I was never once asked to produce my PCGB card at an OPC and now get the same discount, sometimes more, without it.

Christophorous is sent to me free after I walked into the dealers - asked to take a copy of the magazine from the coffee table and was told yes and they would register me and add me to the distribution list. smile

We went on the Exmoor run with the Devon & Cornwall branch PCGB last weekend. There were a couple each of 924 and 944, a 964, my 964RS, a Boxster S, a 968 cab,a 944 cab, a 911E sporto and no snobs, no beards and no horsebrasses.

If you want to get into racing, then PCGB is probably the better - you can then enter the Porche Open, Porche Club and Porsche Speed championships. Their trackdays are a bit more expensive than most, but standards are generally pretty good (with the odd exception!).

>>>>>>10% off a OPCs pays for itself over and over.<<<<<<<

....I run a thirteen year old 993.....there is no time soon that I will be using the over expensive services of an OPC.....not even if hell freezes over.....I believe TIPEC has discount deals with various Porsche suppliers.
