Porsche Boxster 987 Bike Rack

I've recently got into mountain biking but having a boxster it's impossible to transport my bike around. Before taking the extreme measure of getting rid of the car, I wondered if anyone had managed to find a bike rack that fits? I've found a company in the states www.birdautomotive.com who claim that their racks fit the european cars aswell as US but i'm obviously a little wary.

Porsche do a "Porsche Transport System" IIRC that takes bikes. Call your OPC - they can sell you one. Or, at least, you can find out the part number and then see if one is available on eBay etc...

The only thing is; the rack + bike attachment is more expensive than a pretty decent mountain bike!

Thanks but I have already spoken to Porsche. They told me that the system was only for the 986. Apparently, it didn't sell very well and Porsche didn't transfer the system to the 987.

Is this true?

I have a PTS on the Cayman. Costs an arm and a leg. I later found out the system uses the standard T bar connectors and I didnt need to buy the bike carriers from Porsche - never mind!

I am sure I have seen the Boxster version on a car, but cant be 100% sure if it was a 986 or 987...

It looks as if you are correct; the Porsche.com site lists roof racks for Cayman and 986's, but not 987s.

First of all mate there are NO mountains in Hertfordshire!
Secondly (my own little opinion) your boxster would look like sttee with mountain bike stuck on it! Keep it clean!

Have seen this type of system on other cabrios too.

Question could be is there any diff in the A-pillar design and rear wing between the 986 and the 987? If not this rack might still fit.

I'm pondering a 987 next but am a keen cyclist, so would be interested to hear how you get on.

That Bird Automotive carrier looks like a good solution - can't imagine that US cars have different mechanicals than european cars?

i have looked extensively into this issue, and after a lot of time spent on US sites 3-4 years ago, i almost bought the birds thinggy.
This bolts on the chassis near the exhaust and unlike the PTS doesn' t touch the car' s bodywork.

I finally ended up buying one of those though:

they fit perfectly in both boots, and nothing is 'on' the car!

Great idea but I don't really want to buy a new bike... So what made you not get the bird automotive rack? I spoke to porsche yesterday about the fitting of it and they as predicted said that they wouldn't recommend that anything should be attached to the chassis unless it was made by porsche.

I did not buy the Birds rack, simply because i found out about airnimal...
I rode one of the bikes and i loved it... So i bought one. I think they look amazing and design-wise, they have some amazing features. I put the two wheels in the rear boot, and the folded from in the front boot... Very easy...
They are quite amazing road bikes (very rigid frame) when trimmed properly (good groupset, wheels and components).

They also do a MTB, but i would personally not venture there as I do not feel that the concept would adapt well to offroads.

Of course a porsche engineer would tell you that the birds product is no good! Reality is that the people using it have been very happy about it. It is just that it was a little pricey. What i liked about it, is that:
1/ it does not touch the car (neither does the bike when fitted on it).
2/ there are a couple of bolts that need professional fitting around some exhaust-chassis bolts, and then you can click it on-off in seconds.
