Just had to cut a drive in the country side short, I'm getting some worrying readings. The engine temparature guage seems permanently stuck on 3/4 and the oil pressure seems suspiciously high only dropping below 4 bar when idiling.

May be last Saturdays thrash round the Hethel test track has had a detrimental effect on the health of the engine ?

I take it these engines have an oil pressure relief valve, may be mines jammed shut ? And on the issue of water temp the top and bottom hoses where a tad hot to touch so may be its not electrical ?

Any sugestions chaps ?

3/4 on the temp gauge is quite high, the manual states that the temp should be between the two central white marks, yours sounds like it is over the 2nd white?

At that temp the fans should be coming on, do they? A fan switch failure is quite common.

Maybe the thermostat has failed shut and no water is going through the radiator, reach through the front grille and feel it.

Your oil pressure sounds normal. It should be at 4-5 bar when driving and around 3 bar at idle. Normally when your engine gets very hot (like at a track day) you will notice lower oil pressure as the oil gets very thin.

You are right, there is an oil pressure relief valve. Mine needed changing just after I bought the car, I could hear a 'squishing' noise, the valve was partially shut and restricted the flow. I didnt notice any change in oil pressure.

If none of these DIY checks show anything I'd recommend a specialist take a look for peace of mind

The fans always been a bit of a worry it seems to cut in just above 3/4 in traffic and changing the switch didnt make a jot of difference. Its never boiled over and the electrics are 19 yrs old so cant say I trust the readings.

I would be a little concerned at the temperature but apart from that the oil pressure sounds about right, like you say the electrics are 19 yrs old so dont trust the guages implicitly

The 944 can be a pain to fill and bleed properly. A good tip I was told is to raise the front of the car as high as you can before filling, on axle stands if necessary. Turn the heater dial to hot in the car, and open the bleed screw at the front of the engine at the top of the cam cover. Gently pour your coolant into the expansion tank until it starts to dribble out of the bleed hole - tighten up that screw.

Lower the car off the stands, syphon any excess coolant out of the expansion tank and start the car. When it gets fully hot and the fans come on, then open the bleed screw again until clear coolant with no bubbles runs out. Close the screw and that should be it. Keep an eye on the coolant level over the next few days and top up or syphon off WHEN COOL.
