I genuinely despair at the abysmal cheapness...

Ah, woe is me.
Bloody bean counters.
Specifically, the vermin who diluted the Teutonic spannerwerks of the blessed beetles from the late 90s, to wit, the infernal 996.
Took El Porkenwurst up the local ferret way for a quick shakedown, it having had a new battery and very little exercise of late.
Great, fast and unique. You all knew that anyway.
But how does anyone cope with that mound of scratch and squeakfesting masquerading as the centre console and in all probability, the whole dashboard?
I mean, even at Mach HSP* with the TTP exhaust bellowing it's end orf, the sheer symphony of cack grade plastic squealage was even in that maelstrom, a low level source of immense frustration.
I have enquired with Dr Fearns concerning internal trim based amputation and we shall see but before I rip the whole f@cking interior oot, do any venerable members/fellow sufferers have any cunning tips/experience of such irritation - and solutions?
Scum. Scum of The North.

Hi
996 cars suffer alot from windscreen seal/aperture creaking....the main cause of this is that the screen has not been installed in the middle of the aperture.
There is a modification you can do to the aperture to minimise this and this involves a roll of teflon tape and some foam string we call bungee cord.
Most independants can do this job and all OPC's are aware of the problem.
This can sound like the whole dash is alive.

This is a well known 993 issue. I havent heard anything about 996s having the same problem
Good grief Der, this must be serious -your first post for months and it's about a squeaky dashboard -FFS, is that the best you can do????
-you oughta take a ride in my car some time for a spot of rattle and squeak identification.
I'd say give Herr Doktor Fearns a chainsaw and let him sought it out....
And a Happy New Year to you.....

......winter or summer.....no creaks in the 13 year old 993....now that must say something....build quality of the 993 rules.
The creaky windscreen on the 993 used to drive derestrictor mad IIRCPretty sure Von Fearns has confirmed ok or done the windscreen shuffle (taped edges, etc.)
No, this is indisputably crumby grade assembly/material quality at hand.
For example, mild 'patting' of either side of the centre console upright elicits the most appalling racket; a veritable cornucopia of Korean plastics falling on an equally dire pallet of Taiwenese toys from the mid 70s.
It's like Buzz Lightyear having a mosh with Mr Potato Head.
I've experienced something similar with different rounds of cost cutting elsewhere from ze vaterland; early Mercs from the '99-03 era and some distinctly sub E39 shenanigans from Bucholz as recently as 2006.
I bet you don't get this in a clubsport GT2 - it doesn't have a centre console!
Urgh!

Sounds like His Fearnship has located the sources of cruddy sin.
Having examined the dash innards it appears one of the air vents has thrown a piece or two and these will, upon certain speeds o'er expansion joints, produce said clapping effect.
Also, the CD storage unit is truly vile even by the cost cutting standards of late 90s, profit maximising German autocorporations so it is goney whilst the rest of the unit will be swadled in vibration ameliorating material.
Apparently the car has now bedded in afaic (apparently, accoding to an assumption made on my behalf by The Fearnlord) so will be receiving a small dose of additional dilithium.

Der, one source of vibratus annoyus can be ridded (sorry, I don't speak "Derestrcitor" very well yet!) by binning the center console altogether. Gert will sell you the correct kit to remove it - am going to do this on the '3 very soon.
Not only does it look better (imho) and more inkeeping with older interior architectures, it affords more left leg roomage. Please tell me you havn't got a Tip?
