Well following on from the previous thread regarding my cars high temprature readings, I decided to replace the thermostat and see if this improved matters. It turns out there is something more sinister going on !

When I tried to bleed the coolant system after fitting the "stat" I noticed a that no coolant came out of the open bleed valve, just steam once the engine got up to temprature !

I guess this means I've got a blown head gasket or a duff water pump. Bugger ! Both of theese jobs are a bit beyond me as they both involve the removal and refitment of the cam and balancer belts.

But befor I contact a specalist is there possibly something obvious I've missed ?

Interloper,

Just remind me what the problem was? It soulds like it could be the symptoms of an airlock. It could also be something worse, but there's not much point paying somebody a fortune just to find out that it's air in the system. You could quite easily have introduced air when you changd the thermostat.

When you say that you only got steam out of the bleed valve, how long was it open for? Have you tried opening the bleed valve when the engine is cold?

I know I'm not being much help at the moment, but more info would be useful.

Cheers

James

Ok in breif, the engine temprature guage indicates temp when warmed up is 3/4 way round the dial. The top hose gets pretty hot the bottom hose dosent seem to warm up. As a first attempt to resolve the problem I fitted the new thermostat. On refilling the system with coolant I then discovered the air lock.

During a previous job on the car were I had to disconnect a hose I had no problem re-filling the system and bleeding it. This time however there apears to be little or no water getting to the bleed valve.

And yes I did have the valve open from cold when bleeding.

Oops, I posted in the wrong thread, here it is in the correct one:

The 944 can be a pain to fill and bleed properly. A good tip I was told is to raise the front of the car as high as you can before filling, on axle stands if necessary. Turn the heater dial to hot in the car, and open the bleed screw at the front of the engine at the top of the cam cover. Gently pour your coolant into the expansion tank until it starts to dribble out of the bleed hole - tighten up that screw.

Lower the car off the stands, syphon any excess coolant out of the expansion tank and start the car. When it gets fully hot and the fans come on, then open the bleed screw again until clear coolant with no bubbles runs out. Close the screw and that should be it. Keep an eye on the coolant level over the next few days and top up or syphon off WHEN COOL.

From what you say about the temperature of the top and bottom hoses, there are 2 things I can think of that might be causing your problem. It could be the water pump, or a partially blocked rad. You've replaced the thermostat, which would have been my first suggestion, and assuming that you've bled the system completely, they're the next things to check.

Just a quick update. I took the car to Northway on Monday, they have diagnosed the problem as a duff water pump. Hopefully the car should be back up and running properly by close of play Thursday (this is the earliest that they can fit the work in).

Yes it was, rather to well. I used it as additional cooling (for the engine obviously not for the driver !) to nurse the car from were I work to Northway.
