996 Turbo noise from transmission at low revs ????
Discussion
I have a new 996 turbo, manual with x50 upgrade....however, since new it has always had a sort of low rattle in any gear when the revs are below 1600 and you do anything but accelerate slowly...past 1600 and the rattle goes away...I have an engineering background and to me it sounds like the rear to front drive shaft...anyone else have the same thing??..it's not that loud if the radio is up quite a way you can't hear it...cheers
Actually yes... me... exactly the same car, exactly the same rattle.
I just assumed I was being a bit of an ar*e and wasn't giving the engine enough revs and it was labouring (My last car - Caterham R500 was a BITCH like that - it'd only really be happy past 3k rpm, especially uphill).
Having finished running it in, I no longer hear it... but that's as I go through 1600 revs pretty quick and change gear higher up the rev range.
If you do speak to your OPC - mention that I have the same noise (mine from Dick Lovett - Bristol)... and perhaps you'll post back any of their thoughts.

Let me clarify I do get a rattling noise if I try driving in 6th gear at 30mph. But that is at 1,000 revs not 1,600. I put it down to design and now drive at higher revs.
Be interesting to hear how you both get on.

Steve - Perhaps I demo at BTaP so I can hear the problem first hand?

Thanks guys for all your input here....Have nearly done 6K miles so nice to hear not just mine...thought it had something to do with the dampening of the crankshaft I know the 930's had a rubber centre to the clutch to reduce the vibration...put it down to that really...
I have the Ceramic brakes on mine too...like the GT2...
Thanks Guys you have put my mind at rest....but still let me know the outcome of your questions.

Just got back from Swindon OPC.
Forgive any mechanical inaccuracies, when people start talking to me about cogs, I glaze over.
This noise is well known to Porsche and to UK OPC’s. The volume of the noise varies enormously from Turbo to Turbo – but they do tend to get quieter as the miles are added. They also sound louder when cold.
As I understand it, the crank shaft in the Turbo engine is the same as was in the GT1 – but as the GT1 engine wouldn’t meet today’s emissions regulations, some fancy footwork had to be performed by Porsche to make things legal. (This is where I entered the *plotloss* zone). Somewhere between crank and cam a part was engineered, and this is the part that makes the rattle.
Porsche guidelines are, that if the noise happens between 1k rpm and 2k rpm, this is normal and acceptable. If however the noise is audible over 2k rpm, then a visit to your friendly OPC would be advisable.
As I say, the noise is also known to get quieter as the engine ‘beds in’ … hence me not noticing it much these days. (Mine also cannot be heard over 2k revs)
Hope that’s of some help.
