leaking power steering fluid

Just discovered a leak from the hoses down to the steering rack. Any ideas on cost of hoses where to get replacements and god forbid the pumps damaged the worst case scenario!

Pipes into the rack are roughly £300 and we have seen them before where they are very tight to come out of the rack and end up damaging the rack ! they are not the easiest of jobs to do either...

It is being looked at on Friday, hopefully not to much damage done. When topped up with fluid no problems but loses most of the fluid once engine is on. One hose is rigid the other can be pinched together. Excuse the ignorance are there two pairs of hoses to the steering rack or just one.

Hello

There are 2 pipes going to the rack and one is the high pressure pipe from the power steering pump and the other i the return to the power steering tank (resevoir).

Is this a usual fault in 996's. I have had the metal coolant pipe under the car leading to the rad go this year ( blew a hole through!) as will as a cracked coolant head and cap. Is fluid transfer a common fault?

There is a common problem on the return pipe where the alloy crimp on the flexy to hard pipe corrodes causing fluid loss. @ £120 from a dealer for the solid and flexy pipe (this is sold only as on complete unit from the middle of the car forwards) The front subframe will have to be lowered to remove the pipe and then wheel alignment done as well as replacing all the bolts as porsche recomends.

All is not lost! if you can contact a local heavy plant fitter or hydralic specialist and just remove the banjo bolt from the rack end you can just replace the union at very small cost and no alignment probs afterwards.

I have just had this done as mine was picked up on a recent opc health check.

so far it has cost me £248 for the pipes from Porsche @ Bristol and some steering fluid and that is before the labour. Can anyone recommend a good cheap specialist in the Bristol area. Am at my wits end with this car...seriously considering a jag xk

Don't know anyone talented enough to do this unfortunately

Try Pirtek - nationwide industrial hydraulic hose specialists. Call out plus the job should be under what you've paid for the pipes, which you should be able to get a refund on (perhaps less a handling fee).

Thanks Goose, rang them, another useful lead.
Also rang Webb's which was a total waste of time and I would not recommend them at all.

Hi all, sorry for the thread resurrection.

Did anyone find a secure alternative? Been quoted over £1k by the OPC but if it will only fail again I'd rather find a permanent fix.
