Advice/opinions please
Discussion
I currently have a 2003 Boxster S and am thinking of trading it in for a used 911 (say 12-18 months old). Whats version do people think is best? I like the look of the GT3, but have been told its a bitch to drive unless its a track day. Is it worth getting a turbo - which are quite abit more dosh - or go for a 911 4S? Any advice greatly appreciated.
The GT3 is a pussy cat to drive.
Well, compared to a 964RS, at least
The 996TT is obviously an easier car to live with as it is more comfortable, more practical, more safe on wet roads and has a slightly higher ride height IIRC.
PetrolTed really rates the C4S as well.
I would defo go for the GT3. They are not just track animals unless you are a) very soft, b) very rich or c) both.
Cheers

Don`t listen to the negative comments about the GT3 being a bitch to drive.I use mine to commute to London from North Suffolk, using A & B roads as well as motorways in all weathers and I`m an old git not many years off a bus pass and free milk. Also use a Focus RS , another car the critics pan for being "too track focused" , utter nonesense.
Beg steal or borrow a test drive and decide for yourself with an open mind, you wont be disapointed.

Hi Andrew, and welcome to PH.
Not driven a GT3 but am told by several that they are fine, unless you loon it in the wet.
TT is just nuts - you'd probably have to be nuts to buy one. My accountant, my family and all my friends are totally convinced that I am.
C4s probably a great compromise... safe, fast - also has the wide arches, as in the turbo, that (for me) make the car look special.

Thanks for the advice guys. It was actually the saleman at the Porsche garage in Towcester who steered my away from the GT3. Tried to make me buy a 911 Special Edition, which does look the dogs bollocks. Has a bit more grunt over the normal 911, although its all within a milliseconds!
All 996's are good, but if you have got the money to burn and want to upgrade from boxster then make sure the performance gap compared to the boxster is BIG....IMHO this rules out standard 'cooking' carreras of the c2 and c4 ilk, as well as tarted up 'looking' carreras of the c4s and 40yr ilk.
Getcarter made a great choice with the 996TT, the best 'on-roader' you can get, should be good enough to see off a Fezza 360 point-to-point.
Domster gives you the real deal , raw 911 aka GT3, which is a bit bothered by speedbumps but as you already know looks the business.
Get the dosh together, drive both, choose one. sorted.

Andrew, don't forget we are now less than a year away from the new 997, if you are buying new (or nearly new)
this is going to affect your residuals. Better off buying a second hand beastie, the C4's is great but
S/H prices are still near new & there are some attractive looking prices for early Turbo's out there.....go on you know it makes sense !!!!!!!!!!
