Well maybe not that bad but yes it is a little odd from some angles. Like the good lady wife it`s not too photogenic either. To get a decent shot of ours (as used on the website or in Top Marques) I had to dig a 6 foot hole in the ground, climb in, place the camera at just sub ground level and only then did it start to look less like a bird hit by every branch as she fell out of the ugly tree.

But - and it`s a very big but - what a tool on the road. We got one to use and I do mean use. We`ve just done the first 5,000 miles, you may have seen it flying along the motorway with another Porsche strapped to the Brian James Trailer. As a tow car is blows the socks off a Range Rover. The air suspension and general chassis set up make the car super-stable. Even though it`s a humble Cayenne S it`s fun putting a bit of distance between other road users as you pull away from the lights (with said trailer attached !).

The ride is relaxing without being over soft. You can place the car well on the road and being high up you are afforded a good view of the road ahead. No it`s not a 911. It was never intended to be. Porsche already make a car for those people and it`s called er.... a Porsche 911 ! The Cayenne is for people who either need 1 car to suit all their needs, or to be the donkey people use when they`re not in their 911. It still has the breeding and characteristics you would expect from a Porsche though, make no mistake.

The 928 was the same. Although it sought a similar customer to the XJS and Mercedes SEC it distanced it`s self from the other cars by still being a drivers car. It didn`t wallow around on the road. So too the Cayenne sets it`s self apart from other "SUV`s".

I had a long chat with a Range Rover owner the other day. He said the Cayenne wasn`t a proper off roader. When I asked why not he replied, "because it drives too much like a car on the road". Interesting theory but I can`t see how good road manners equals poor off road ability. Or is that what Ranger Rover say to customers disappointed with their car`s crap handling ? "Ah yes sir well that`s the thing, they have to handle like a 17 stone Huddersfield lass in Cinderella`s on a Friday night, otherwise they wouldn`t be any good in the peruvian Jungle". Who the hell is going to put their 60 grand Vogue through a muddy ditch and ruin that lovely - and it is lovely - leather interior.

I can confirm that if you are stupid enough to want to risk upsetting the slightly firm but still rather sensual lady on the sat nav system, the Cayenne will handle the rough stuff. If you cough up the ackers Mr Porsche will even entertain you on his off road course. Take a spare pair of pants.

Get used to it folks the Cayenne is here to stay. It`s a proper Porsche through and through. Those who say different either drive a car other than a Porsche or are rather sad elitists who think Porsches should still have wind up windows. Why stop at that. Why not insist they all have roll cages, noisey gearboxes, exhausts bolted straight onto the chassis, centre lock wheels, run slick tyres, have rock hard suspension and a GT3 cup badge on the back !! See you on track Saturday at Silverstone for the Bill Taylor memorial !!

Just in case you were wondering I`m the ugly git behind 911virgin.com. And don`t take life too seriously. We`re only here once. Have fun, enjoy yourself and smile. Love, peace and happy motoring.

Henry.

Henry, thanks for that running report on the Cayenne S. Interesting reading following on from having read Clarksons opinion of the Cayenne Turbo at the weekend (Sunday Times Driving section), general consensus is moving to the Cayenne leaving everything else standing from an engineering point of view.

It's a great shame the vehicle has taken a severe beating from the ugly stick. Although there could be a silver lining from this, with us bargain hunters picking up the ultimate in speedbump jumping at a bargain price a few years down the road.

I think you`ll be waiting a little while until it becomes a "bargain". Or is it just that my bargains have less noughts on the end than your bargains !!

Anyway what`s this "from what I`ve read on the postings it sounds as though the Cayenne will suit you down to the ground". Surely people could only comment on my shy retiring personality and suave chisled good looks !!

Kind regards a buckinghamshire country gentleman.

Assuming that Cayennes depreciate at a "high end offroader" rate (due to high fuel consumption and UK fuel prices), I feel a 3 or 4 year old Cayenne S with say 40k miles on the clock for £22/23k would make a great buy as an allrounder vehicle. I'll probably be saying goodbye to my merc barge if/when this happens.

Oh BTW clubsport is one of those purists you describe at the end of your first post.

Don`t quote me but I suspect your 3-4 year old Cayenne will be making over £30k. Probably £35-40k. The sticker price may say £44,500 but the bloke won`t be paying a lot less than £55,000 for the car you`ll be wanting to buy in a few years. Don`t use the Range Rover as a guide to how the Porsche will depreciate.

In case you haven't done so already try searching this forum for references to yourself and your establishment. You will see your reputation precedes you.

Anyway, don't let that put you off. The contributions to this site from specialists such as 9m, yourself and others can only be a good thing for enthusiasts like me.

If I worried what other people thought I`d have given up and got my old job back at Mc Donalds long ago !!

Yes possibly a little eccentric but I promise you all it`s meant with no malice. It`s just hard when you`re passionate about something and you hear so much crap and see people making so many misguided descisions.

But hey ho. The sun`s shining and I`ve got more cars to get on the website.

Keep the wheels of industry turning lads.

I don't want and hope I never want a huge fat SUV, but I think the Cayenne is a great looking example of the species. Guy down the road has a black Cayenne S. Nice.

BMW X5 - Fugly
Range Rover - double Fugly
M-class - woman's car (even though the girlfriend's Dad has an ML55)

Just goes to show, we all have different taste. Luckily. Otherwise we'd all be driving the same model!

Domster where were you last Tuesday night. Sharon told me she was going out to the Bingo but by the sounds of it I`m not sure.

Could I suggest you put some specsaver vouchers on the christmas list !

Fair comment by the time you add satnav, air suspension, larger alloys, Pimp glass etc. Although I'm still hoping for high inital depreciation from a selfish point of view. Time will tell.

There has been an explosion of Cayennes

Round our way all lady drivers so far, except one chap in a lhd. Recognise a few plates swapped straight off the X5 and MLs they used to have.

LOL

How did you know Tue was 'bingo' night? I'm rather worried now.

Glad Tom is OK. I've told him to stay away from nuns but he won't listen.

Good to have you on the forum, BTW. Although I'll be the first to admit that P&P has polarised opinion (including mine) before now, you fulfil a unique niche in the Porsche scene, update your website regularly, and write posts that are nearly as funny as derestrictor's. You also like RSs and share your wife. For those things I applaud you.

Whilst you lot are beavering away at work the missus is floating around in the fruits of your labour. Or are we trying to say the Cayenne is a woman`s car. Bloody hell you can`t buy anything these without accused of being effeminate.

Is it cos I is a hairdresser ?

Really, it's nice to hear a balanced opinion. I mean I've been driving a Fiat Ducato LWB lately.

Pulls an easy 80 on the motorway & you can slice right through those blind S bends with barely a lift. You can also park just about anywhere with an 'engineer on call' posted on your windscreen, & even X5's on the school run give you right of way.

The girl friend will never dare get into terminal arguments because she knows when yoiu say ' your moving out ', you can shift all her stuff in one go right on the spur of the moment, & bring back ten mates for a party on the way back. All for £ 8995.00 plus VAT.
