Does anyone know just what is the "special tool" that is used to tension the cambelt. Is it just a spring balance? Any other tips as I really need not to mess this up.

I think it's a dial guage thingy that measures tension - Is that the same as a spring balance ? If you can get a look at the Porsche workshop manual (lots around on CD) there is a picture of it.

It's a very special tool specifically designed for the 944 belts, blah, blah, blah so is therefore very expensive. Pelican parts sell it in the States for $545

There is a full procedure with further pictures at www.clarks-garage.com/ in the Garage Shop section. Most independants charge around £200 to change both belts.
