997 Complete Engine failure after 30,000 miles

Need some help if I may

I have a 997 S - 54 plate that has driven apporx 30k miles. Has full service 3 months ago

I am told that it now needs engine replacement as cylinder lining failed & caused cylinder to breal through. Result broken engine, oil seaping though left had exhasut

Anyone else had this, and what was the outcome?

(and yes I am calmer now...but still cant belive its happened after so few miles)

Very sorry to hear that.

Worrying news for those of us that think the 997 is exempt from these types of issues. I recently purchased a Cayman S and for once have decided on the back of Porsche's 'legendary' reliability not to bother with a warranty. Having covered 20k my rear shocks (PASM) already need replacing but I have so far assumed 997's (and therefore my Cayman) had bullet proof engines?

Hope it doesn't cost you too much in terms of cash or pain

What's the background as to how the diagnosis came about?

i have a 54 plate 997s with 26000, warranty is up in may, you have just made my mind up to renew it

same happened to mine after 14k miles,opc fitted new engine free of charge.

Speak with the OPC to start then head down the complaint route. Porsche have been known to offer good-will gestures with replacements in the past. Dunno if they still do it now though, but definately worth a letter of complaint.

"a car dealer" - a take it not an official porsche one (OPC)? (Can't be thinking about it or it would have come with a 12 month used car OPC warranty)

Someone will correct if I get this wrong, but I understand under UK law all dealers must effectively offer a 3 month warranty with all used cars. You may need to take it back where you bought it to give them the chance to fix it - as soon as an OPC works on it you may loose your come back to the dealer who sold it to you. Be careful - you must give the selling dealer the chance to fix / remedy the situation themselves I think.

Where did you buy it? Bear in mind any indie Porsche trader will be worried about negative publicity, so you must also give them the benefit of the doubt / chance to fix it before you start complaining about them on here (not that you have, or not that you're allowed to name and shame under forum rules anyway - but at this stage the selling dealer hasen't necessarily done anything wrong of course).

If you purchased it from ANY car dealer, you legally have a good claim for a new engine from the SELLING dealer....talk to trading standards....

Recommend you talk to the dealer first before engaging with trading standards - give the garage the chance to put it right.

If that route doesn't work out then get Trading Standards involved.

In that case get trading standards on the case before you choose to proceed on any option - you'll get good cover from the statutory rights perspective.

Any action you take now (i.e. getting the car fixed) is at best going to complicate matters and at worse likely to undermine your position .

I know mate - and whatever I say won't help you feel any better - but things like this could happen to any car at any time.

The upside is you'll get a new engine (hopefully not at your cost) which means your car will be like new

Still...I will give all concerned a week to sort this out for me....but it has already been 2 weeks & no progress

All companies have problems...its how they resolve that makes the company great....and at the moment they are not covering themselves in glory

Sorry to hear about your problem.

I think you need to give the supplying dealer the opportunity to rectify the problem in the first instance. Did you buy it outright or did you take Hire Purchase by the way? If it was HP then contact the finance company as it is 'their' car technically so would have a vested interest in having the problem rectified by the supplying dealer. From my experience the statutory warranty period is a bit of a grey area. Small dealers will quote 3 months but it also boils down to consumer rights and being 'fit for purpose' which tends to stretch this to 6 months. I'd be polite and point out their obligations.

This is a Porsche issue, my gearbox needed replacing on an old CSL (swarf in gearbox) no warranty they just replaced it, 7k...

They were surprised and slightly horrified as Porsche should be.

I still wouldn't have a warranty though, apart from Italian. Too much insurance in life...
