porsche '44 turbo - left standing - advice req
Discussion
hello,
i have been offered a '1990 turbo with 42k genuine on it. its been standing for at least 7months and previosly only been run very infrequently. the chap is looking at around 7.5k after he has prepped it back to working order. my questions are: a) is the price sounding ok, its pretty much book for a car with no service history. b) what things are more likely to go wrong with a car that has been standing?
your replies are appreciated.

7 months isn't too bad, you may have some leaks (from hatch)
I would squirt some oil down the spark plug holes b4 starting, change all fluids (brake, gearbox, coolant, lsd)
The price sounds pretty good, what is the condition of the car like?

the car is in good condition. basically the chap has had it in his yard for 5yrs and run it about here and there but never far. the car was booked in 5yrs ago for a new rear 3/4 panel and the chap did the work plus some other bits but the guy never collected the car and when he was asked for payment he released the car. it sounds longwinded but the guy who has got it is a friend and i know him to be trustworthy. anyways he is respraying the whole thing and making sure everything is working. i'm just worried about reliability of gaskets etc.
In terms of inspecting b4 purchase try here

I would check the coolant for oil and vice versa, pay attention to the boost gauge and how that behaves, and all the electrics
Good luck

I would be a bit wary of oil seals etc. Replacing the cambelt would be a must.
The price sounds ok-ish for such a low mileage car but the lack of any proof to document the mileage may damage the eventual resale value. So long as you intend to keep it for a while that shouldnt matter too much.

I have only had mine a couple of months but absolutely love it. I have had no problems so far, apart from a few annoying rattles. But that is to be expected from a 15 year old car. The hatch leaked a bit, but a new seal (approx £30) has fixed that.
Mine already had the boost enhancer fitted so i cant comment on what they are like without it.
There is a 944 mailing list, where you can find the answers to anything 944. Go to www.titanic.co.uk and follow the links.
Re mods, the most popular seems to be a gururacing chip from the States, which ups power to somewhere near 300BHP for approx $300. There are several guys on the mailing list who have gone this route and seem very happy with it.
Anything else you need to know, ask away!

thanks for the info on the list!! sounds like you are another turbo fan!! i have driven a few and found them all to be excellent fun.
i'd like to know if you have down any body mods as i was looking to smooth the look by removing all the rubbing strips etc. the car already has clear front indicators that look much nicer to me. i found the h/lights to be a little poor, is this the case you have found?
also the car has 968 mirrors and 911 gt3 rims. it looks rather like this one www.diateam.no/porsche/
except its in arena red metallic from the 993 era.

The lights aren't exactly the best feature! I am sure the bulbs can be uprated but I havent looked into that yet. The bodywork on mine is all standard and i will probably keep it that way, but I may change the orange indicators as they do spoil it a bit.
I do love the turbo rush but it is a bit of an on-off switch. I am used to Impreza turbos which are quite progressive. With the 944 there is nothing below about 3500 rpm and then all hell brakes loose. All in all the car has exceeded my expectations.

did you get a chance to see the diateam version? bar the huge spoiler and the big double exhausts it looks nice enough.
the clear lenses side/front make the '44 look a lot more modern. also the 968 mirrors are very much nicer looking than the standard items.

these chaps do a nice line in front indivators.

Yep. Change all the fluids before even trying to start the car. 7 months shouldn't have done too much harm, but it's always better to be safe.
And when you start driving it, take it gently like you were running in a new car. Overdo it too soon and those dried out oil seals might leak. Get them working gently, and you might well be ok.

You are all intelligent well educated people. But sometimes I do wonder. The words genuine, mileage and no service history can never be used in the same sentence. Forget the number on the speedo. Would you still buy the car if it had 150k on the speedo. If you would then buy it. If you wouldn`t then walk away. There is now way you can prove the provenence of a random number with no history. The car is 13 years old. Assuming it`s been in the bodyshop (after sustaining damaged that required at the very least a new rear quarter panel by the sound of things) it was still 8 years old when it went in.
Make bloody sure the bloke selling the car does actually own it. It sounds awfully messy. He may be a top dude and your best mate but the law is the law and you may find he`d rather kiss goodbye to your friendship rather than his £7,500 if the car gets taken off you.
Make sure you not only check the car with HPI for outstanding finance / insurance total loss / stolen info but look at all the numbers on the car and make sure they are genuine and that the car doesn`t show signs of damage. Do you know what those numbers should look like and what those signs would be ?
Go steady !
