944 Rear Seatbelts

Hi, I am new here, so please be gentle!
I am looking at buying a 944 as my station car and am looking to spend up to £3k, my preference is to spend less than that and then put it into my local indy to come up with a list of must do/nice to do jobs and work out who does what.

My question is; I would prefer to get one with proper lap & Shoulder Seatbelts in the rear, they seem to become standard in '87 for the turbos and '88 for the NA cars, is there anyway of retro-fitting them to earlier cars?

This question has just become very relevant as the Indy SAAB, Noble & TVR dealer that I have bought 6 SAABs from over the past 9 years has just got an '85 2.5 in, which while it is not my ideal model (would prefer an S, S2 or 2.7) it would make the transition very painless and the car is likely a good 'un if they are selling it (One of the dealer owners has had a couple of 944s)

You can retrofit seat belts as long as there are suitable chassis mounting points. There obviously will be on the 944. I had them put in the rear seats of the 930 for the kids. Cost about £200 IIRC.

I am assuming that they probably had to fit belts in North America earlier, so the inertia reel and shoulder strap mounting points must be present behind the trim?

I have dropped a mail to TWG in Peterborough to ask them if they know

As long as the mounting points are in place on the C pillar and the boot there should be no problem fitting them. Try ebay for belts as they are on of the first things to be taken out by the track day brigade.

Good idea PJS, looking at photos of belted cars versus lap belted I will need a new Boot-liner to cover the Inertia Reel units as well.

My mate has 944 Turbo 1986 and has rear lap belts that came with it that he wants to fit.

Looks like the rear seat squab needs to come out and possbily pull the side panels off but the belts came with no mounting instructions. We need to know how to get the rear seat out / side panels - I'm sure we can get them out but damage free is preferable!

Can anyone give some fitting advice/instructions on these I can pass on?

Just feel for the holes in the corner of the bum part of the seat then cut holes to match.

UK cars needed rear belts fitted around 1987, but they were required in other bits of Europe much earlier than that so mounting mounts will be there.

Is there a 3 point option on either the 944 or 968 Cabriolet?
It would seem not but maybe someone has a car with a lap & diagonal fitted.

Pretty sure the answer is no to both as they don't have a proper C post. Gets asked quite frequently on www.tipec.net!
