Its time to store my boxster for the winter and im concerned about the battery going flat and the associated problems. i have no mains electric in the garage. can anyone help with the following,
1, How long will the battery last without use ?
2, Ive read about a fix that will allow me to open the bonnett if the battery does go flat, involving an old mobile phone charging cable connected to a spare battery and plugged into the cig lighter. Is this safe ?
3, has any body got a solar trickle charger that is located outside rather than inside the car , as my garage has no windows.

yes, i know the the best way is of course to use it. but time and wheather may not allow. thank you.

Why dont you just disconnect the battery, lock the car manually and use some simple form of disabling device like steering wheel lock, or a couple of wheel clamps to protect it...job done!

Blimey! You can bear NOT to drive for four months? Put on a coat, take the roof off and drive it anyway...

I have left mine for two to three weeks at a stint and it has started on the first turn of the key no fuss. Take it out for a half-hour drive and put it back and you shouldn't need to bother with any of that trickle charger nonsense...

David is right, the only way to store a car when you have no power source is to disconnect the battery.

Get power installed in your garage!

I used to do the storage thing every year (for the past nine), but this year I've decided to use my car all year round and enjoy every minute!

Ideally you should at the very least go out and start her up, roll her around etc once a fortnight, unless you are planning on putting her up on axle stands etc.

But to be honest it's a boxster not a 911 Turbo S, just drive it and be done with it

As already said, if you're going to leave your car over winter, the least of your problems is the battery going flat. You should either lay it up properly (leaving it in a regular garage, even if jacked up isn't going to do it any good), or drive it.

Personally, I'd either drive it all winter, or sell it somebody who will.

Watch out that the discs are nice and dry!

After a week mine look like orange fluffy coasters!

I dread to think whats happening inside the damn things.

Think you should drive it though - even if its just on sunny looking days. You get a ten year body cover so don't worry about the salt too much.....

thank you. i do intend to try and use the car. but often have to work weekends and dont use the car in the wet. hence the possibilty of it not moving for a few weeks at a time. my garage is away from the house hence no electric.

Attatch jump leads to battery leaving the ends outide the car. Buy spare battery, connect together, unlock.

Simple.

You don't drive it on wet days? Whyever not? It won't go rusty if you do you know.

Be careful! This will probably invalidate your insurance, as the insurance company will no doubt stipulate that the alarm is on at all times, and for that you need power

mate i went on my honeymoon for 2weeks, and had my boxter in my garage, when i came back it was completely flat, and as the security system goes across all the fuses porsche assistance couldnt do anything at my home but had no choice but to tow it to AFN in guildford. who then tried to re-charge the battery (in order to save me £75 for the cost of buying a new battery. However their labour cost was £80 for the charging. In the end plus VAT and the total bill amounted to around £200. This was last month so please be warned don not store you boxter for too long.
