Am considering purchasing a 993 TT and have a couple of questions.

1)In terms of future values is there anything I should steer clear of ie colour, spec, mods etc?

2) What difference does the 430bhp upgrade make to the standard 993 TT considering it will only be used for road use? Is it worth looking for a model with this factory upgrade?

3) Is there any difference other than age between the 1995 and 1997/8 993 TTs?

5) How much would it cost to fit the 3 spoke steering wheel and is the carbon trim available for the interior?

Any info would be much appreciated

Thanks

John

I've never had one John but been in & looked at a few. I've been told to steer clear of Arena red. I think most bits came as standard on the 993 Turbo4. Personally I'd keep the interior standard.

As far as differences between the standard car and the turbos. Apart from the visual differences I cant imagine they are much different on the road. Maybe on the track the extra power and better brakes would come into play.

Ceratinly at Bruntingthorpe the X50 996TTs are around 10mph faster than the standard turbos over 1.8 miles but bearing in mind you are looking at 180/190mph its not hugely relevant on the road. All IMHO. That said I'd always want the fastest incarnation of any car I owned. Best of luck. I think the 993T4 shape is lovely.

Stay clear of lairy colours inside and out, as these are worth less than sensible ones. (The converse applies to 993RSs). Make sure it has the toys, although I'm not sure they did an option of cloth seats like on the 959

Turbofree has this option on his car, but Derestrictor's tuned standard car is significantly quicker. It is not a pre-requisite and is quite rare. Nice to have but no sleepless nights, IMO. I mean the standard one does 0-60 in 3.6 and 0-100 in 9.1 seconds, so is no slouch.

Not sure, but I think they strengthened first gear synchro in later ones, as full bore starts could cause failure on early cars. Not a massive worry IIRC - have a look at www.993tt.com for more details.

Well, you lose your airbag unless you go for a techart airbag one etc. The 993RS one is non-airbag, and costs about 300 GBP. Momo wheels etc. fit with the right adaptor and are cheaper, say from 100 GBP. Yes, you can fit carbon bits into the interior. I think www.design911.co.uk do them.

Arena red is not such a bad colour on these,,the Porsche press car was this colour and i feel works quite well.
Bear in mind stsndard is 408bhp,there is an upgrade to 430bhp & also an X50 450bhp option,,,these are the showroom levels of tune..You can quite easily,,depending on the depth of your pocket safely go beyond this.I am sure DeRestrictor will enlighten you of the finer points when he sees this thread.

I would also check www.rennlist.com as they have a comprehensive forum dedicated to the 993T4.

(1) Colourwise as Craig mentioned people tend to value Arena red slightly lower. The reason for this is it was one of the launch colours on press cars etc and so there are more of them about. Case of supply and demand rather than a bad colour. Personally I like Arena red but it must go with black or grey interior. Good for resale is Black, Silver and blue metallics.

(2) The 408/430bhp, difference from memory is a larger intercooler and different software. Of course these cars are highly modable just speak to the likes of Ninemeister on this forum or take a look at the back of 911&Porsche World for other tuners. I've not driven both so cannot comment if there is a noticable difference. I am advised the difference in the 420/450bhp of the 996tt and 996tt X50 is noticable. With the 993tt at 5 years old or more and out of warranty I would concentrate more on condition and history and if after you want to go quicker consult one of the tuning Gurus. Derestrictor (poster on here) has his car modded up to near 500bhp.

(3) Not that I know of. However in 1998 they did a run out limited edition of 993 Turbo S which will carry a premium of £15/20k+.

(4) Don't know about the steering wheel but carbon fibre look bits should be available cheaply, again check out the advertisers of 911 & Porsche World.

I'm sure I'm wrong on some points. If in the tradition of PH someone can step in and take the pi$$ AND correct me.

Looks OK to me DAZ

With respect to the interior, check out the likes of www.essentialstyling.com/993_products.htm or www.design911.co.uk/index.htm, although I think I would spend the money of tuning rather than trim. Just my 2p worth

Best of luck anyway

Hail John,

Obviously I am ridiculously biased.

But only in the sense that when Tommy Lee was Pammy's beau, it was perfectly acceptable for him to vociferously extoll the huge benefits of medical sillica, bulk peroxide purchasing and lashing of low rent, home made porn.

You're always onto a winner when the basic package is so complete. The differential from 408 can only be significantly appreciated (by driving dipsticks like me) unless you probe 450 plus...

It is, as they say, a nil brainer.

I changed the standard Clapham omnibus tilling device for a nifty wee Techart 3 spoker and it was the usual pant removal session that even dustcap replacement necessitates on these damn things...you must recall that these were £92k when new and the bits admirably emphasise this is no Cinquicento.

The difference in feel was a revelation and I immediately improved from ham fisted to mildly incompetent, overnight.

I would certainly advocate bucket seats at some point but as Domster says, unless you are a certified keeper of the pointy Schnellerhoof, 408 bhp and a (mandatory!) sports exhaust will complete a faultless (dare I say perfect?) package.

Hurrah.

Thanks Guys for all your quick responses which has helped me tremendously. So think I will now look out for 1997/8 Silver 993TT with black interior if poss. Saw a nice one at the Classic Car Show last weekend being sold by AutoBahn although it has had 5 owners which put me off a bit.

Still I can afford to wait and find the right one as I still need to sell my car.

Silver is good for hiding the dirt. Of course when you have a household staff including a car cleaner you can drive a shiny black car like Derestrictor.

Actually, leaping to the Northern John Menzies affitionado's assistance here boys, he has to drive dahn sahf whenever he comes out to play, normally in the pissing rain / snow whatever so even the finest efforts of the butler get somewhat spoiled on the journey down.

Indeed; at the last meeting of the Brunters Boyz it looked damned fine.

John, I drive past Autobahn every day on my way into work - if you want me to have a shuftie at this magnificent steed then I'll be only too happy to. Isn't it a left hooker though? Or am I thinking about another car?

With regard to Derestrictors car, it is simply the fastest point to point car I have ever driven. Its like riding a cruise missile thats been equipped with go kart steering (including the silly sized wheel). There is another benefit of a smaller wheel - it nicely obscures the speedometer, handly if Plod manage to catch you. That aside (and I never drove it with the full size Bakelite rim, to be fair), the handling is superb, interior classic Porsche 911 and the noise of the thing! Well - ask my neighbours. Its the only car out of all my friends that neighbours can spot without seeing it. They can hear it just outside of Nuneaton. I live near Daventry.

As Arnie says in the seminal "Commando"........ DO IT!!!!!!!

i enquired about the silver aerokitted car at the garage mentioned & the guy told me it had a factory 420 power upgrade,,,i mentioned the 993 power upgrades were 430 & 450...the 420 being the output of the standard 996TT...are you quite sure?..
They were having nothing of it and i wasn't as familiar with Porsches as them etc....
I didn't go to see it in case the car was very different to what they thought it was.

Bluevelvet, On their website it is advertised as a 430Bhp Factory Upgrade so perhaps sales guy was confused. I was more put off by the 5 owners or is this normal for a 993TT?

Curious...as when i asked the question, it had "factory power upgrade" as the site description.....i asked which of the 2 factory upgrades it was,,,,maybe they did pay more attention to our conversation than i realised.

Factory schmactory.

Whip the lid orf, chuck in some of Scotty's finest d-crystals and emerse yourself in a layer of Holst's finest Bringer of War suite and then select the emptiest ribbon of tarmac in your locale.

Hold 4000 rpm and then dump the clutch with more relish than a gypsy king alone in the ketchup department of Basingstoke McDonalds.

It makes being bipedal an utterly reasonable proposition.
