959 on ebay.....
Discussion
Behave....it would be a squeeze to get it in,,,but one 911 is enough for me.I would hate to have the choice of 2 i would always be late in getting to my destination as i wouldn't be able to make up my mind.
I thought it would more or less be astraight swap for an X50 vs 959 at it's advertised price, shouldn't worry the bank manager too much on that basis. The 959 is an icon and if you wnt looking for one it could take ages to find another at sensible money.
Did you read october porsche post, page 36/7 it is about Lord Mex... who took his 959 to Bruntingthorpe in spring 1989,,they got the speedo to read 205mph,which they reckoned was a real 190mph.
Sept 1989 ....look how far Porsche have progressed? The only difference is that is it is now cheaper to access that performance, weather you do it by X50 or second hand 959..

I did think about buying it given the price, but the biggest problem with a 959 is the potential repair/maintenence bills and parts that are hugely expensive.
It is also not that fast relative to todays cars. If you search around the net you'll find lots of articles where they state that Porsche understated the actual weight.
Some tests are here:
See: http://autozine.kyul.net/959/959_7.htm
The Sport version of the 959 does 0-100mph in about 8.3 seconds, which is same as a GT2 and only slightly quicker than an X50. However there were very few Sports built (about 10% of 959s). The Comfort version is circa 9.5 sec to 100mph, i.e. slower than a 996TT, let alone an X50 or GT2.
The 959 was amazing in its day, but would be beaten in every area by today's cars which have the benefit of 15 extra years of technology and development.
I still love the look of the car and it was a 'bedroom poster' car for me, but just like the Countach on Top Gear yesterday, I imagine that the reality would not be so impressive in todays supercar market.

PS Is still love the 959, so don't flame me......

GT2 is running well, I've done nearly 3,000 miles in it in 5 months, so it gets used. Trouble is that it's so quick at 'autobahn' speeds, I keep finding myself accidently doing 140mph-150mph on motorways.......
The front PCCBs were kindly replaced by Porsche under warranty as they were completely knackered at 9,000 miles. The OPC said they cost £5,500+vat per disc to replace, which makes me worry a little bit. If I take it for track days I'll probably get a set of steel discs fitted which I don't mind paying to replace (and store the PCCB). There is a huge debate raging in the USA over PCCB due to several failures after short mileages or track use and even Porsche have now revised their claims for PCCB. Originally they said they were good for 300,000km and track use, now they say they need to be checked or replaced after every track event.
The suspension is also far too stiff for UK B-roads and on fast drives through Sussex countryside, one or more wheels are frequently off the ground (as Henry following in his GT2 observed). It also scrapes the front spoiler on a daily basis.
How's the 993RS going?

Sounds fun ..if a little scary with the GT2!
I have been following the many PCCB threads on rennlist amongst others, interesting topic, seems to me no real consistency,i would definitely run on steels considering the cost/peace of mind trade off.
993 going well tks Guy,,gradual course of improvement, total clean up/polish of body interior, wheels, all minor parking dents removed, new fog lights/ headlights lenses & wheel arch liners.
I tried the RSR boxes but reverted to standard with new large oval tips.
it is running a lot better now the ignition has been overhauled after a run at Bruntingthorpe...all in all very pleased,,,as you recall the ability to get speed off is amazing!
I hope to get to the g force rolling road venue in the new year,,you should take the ol' girl out for a spin, there is quite a difference in engine responsiveness.

Glad to hear it's going well, the 993RS is one of the greatest cars of all time...........
In an ideal world I'd love to strip at least 100kg from the GT2 with carbon body panels and also increase the bhp to about 600bhp, but with a warrantied car of this value, you basically don't touch it and enjoy it as it is.

Sounds like a great plan Guy,,,i get the impression you have been spending too much time on the rennlist forums, our friends across the pond are putting expensive ideas in your head,,it's safer on here for the wallet
