964 not very responsive
Discussion
I have a 93 964 cab, Purchased in May this year. The car is flat and not very responsive only comming to life in the very last range of the revs, is this normal, the car has covered 155k klm, no oil leeks(that i can see anyway), no smoke, no funny sounds from the engine. Now and agian the car comes alive and feels good and fast. When i put my foot down I seem to have to wait for the power. Any suggestions on the fault.
Running faults like this could be to do with the ignition system, engine sensors or ECU, the fuelling system or the air metering. It is virtually impossible to diagnose the car online.
I would get it down to a decent mechanic who can check the basics out for you.
Even if we pointed you towards a possible culprit like the air flow sensor, it is difficult to describe how to find it, let alone check it and replace it.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I would strongly recommend getting a tech to look at it.

1st bet is the belt linking ya twin distributors has snapped, this would mean 6 plugs rather than 12 are working.
2nd bet- at the 100k miles mark like your engine is at now the 964 engine often needs a top end rebuild- with worn rings, valve guides etc- so I'd get cyl leakage & a compression check done.
Either way you need to see a Porsche specialist

as iguana points out, it may be the distributor belt..
i would take the dist caps off and check their condition to start with, if not perfect,,,replace them
they are £30 each rotor arms are £12 each
While caps are off turn on the rotor ams,if the lower one turns on its own without being locked into the top one, chances are connecting blt is broken,a tricky job.
If all looks fine, make sure that all of your plugs are good.
If you still have proclems,it could be down to wear / carbon build up,this is obviously more expensive and vcan be tested with a compression check on the barrells.
i recently had lack of pick up which was cure by new ignition parts.

I would dyno test it first. Once the performance of the engine is quantified I would then chose between fault finding/repair (if there are problems) and performance upgrades (if there are not).
In the meantime find someone who has the same car or a lot of experience to drive it and give you a second opinion. If it is a C4 do not forget that you are dragging around 1450kg dry so it never feel as responsive as an RS.
In order of preference for responsiveness improvement, think RS flywheel, cup pipe/cat bypass, K&N and remapping.

Having posted this a while ago, the car went to a local so called specialist, they said as was well and just let me go with a large bill. Over the last week I have noticed a strong smell on start up that soon go´s when warm.
Domster thought the car is running rich. Can you advise more on this so I know what I am talking about when I take it back.
Thanks.

Is the car still down on power?
The dizzy belt failure was mentioned re a 993 and I suppose this could be an option.
Remember that cars should run rich for cold starts, that's normal. It's when they get warm and the fuel mix should be leaner that overfuelling is a problem.
It is not normal for a smell of fuel to be batantly evident in the cabin tho', so maybe check for leaks. Remember the fuel tank is in the front and the engine is in the back

if you have checked the quality of the ignition system,
get the car on to a rolling road to find out how much down on power it is.You should also be able to get a reading of when the power tails off and see if there is any spark arching or anything...my local rolling road do a basic run for £30 to give you an idea.
Not meaning to be over arrogant but a 964 cab is not the fastest car out there depends what you were driving before to compare it to ?
get the numbers then you will know how far away and where on the rev range you are from the 250 bhp.
