I know that the oil level gauge on the dash isn't very reliable but i know i have a small oil leak on a pipe union that needs replacing so in the mean time im keeping a very close eye on the consumption. over the last couple of weeks i have done a fair amount of miles, 400 of them very quick ones and the others a bit more sedately. when using all the power of the car obviously i am getting through a bit more oil and almost none when gentle( tricky to do). the gauge has been going down and therefore i have been topping it up, however the gauge started to go down again on the weekend yet now it is going back up. the dipstick shows this too. what is going on?? The oil pressure is spot on throughout the rev range and the level doesnt fluctuate with the pressure. whats happin' angels??

Are you perhaps checking it hot sometimes & cold at others?

You need the engine hot- say after 10miles of driving & the engine running to check on the dipstick.
