996 short shifter kit
Discussion
Hi mate
I have one on my 996TT which was supplied and fitted by Porsche.
Absolutely fantastic! Makes a real difference.
I dont accept the comments above about it being bad for the box. The box still remains very easy to select gears, and I havent missed a gear since!
I am not the only one that have had this done - do a search, you will find a few links on it

If you intend to track the car, you will regret it - it's too notchy. For road use it will be fine.
Can't speak for the 997 kit - not sure if you can swap to this and have no experience of what it feels like.
Given you've said you have no experience of it I'm not sure how you can assert your first statement !! The 7ssk is just fine on track - yes when cold its a bit notchier than standard. Additioanlly, if you want a short shift that performs great on track and is even shorter than the 7ssk get the Manthey shifter - its rifle bolt and track developed and proven. Can't speak for the 997 kit - not sure if you can swap to this and have no experience of what it feels like.

Short shifters are like marmite and if the standard 'box is in good condition, most people really shouldn't need to change it. Everyone I know who have gone for an aftermarket short shifter on a 996 has regretted it - all of them do track days.
I said I don't have experience of swapping a 997 kit for the 996 - my comment was a specific response to the post above. I do have experience of racing a short shifter on a 996 (think it was B&M but not positive). I believe DanH who also posts on Rennlist might have swapped to the 997 shifter in his 6RS.
If the OP wants to improve the 'box, I recommend looking at ring and pinion, new synchros (may get tired over time) and the Cup linkage, but not to bother with 996 short shifter unless he has specifically tried this out beforehand. Rennlist is a good resource for tips.

The B&M shifter for the 6, if thats what you have experience of, is totally different than the 7ssk - much shorter, too short imo, and yes i've tried it.
Stevo is right, if you want to really improve the action get the cup cables. I've looked into this myself but Fearnsport have advised that my shift is just about perfect and given its a road car primarily I should think hard about the extra vibrations it will bring.
I would also say, that easy to overlook, but a great help to the smoothness of the action in my experience is changing out the gearbox oil (& front diff) - porsche say this is a 96k mile job but i did it at 30k and it made an immediate difference.
Did 25 laps of the nurburgring (Nord) last weekend, followed by 7 or 8 laps of the GP Track - didnt miss a gear, changed silky smooth, and felt like it should have done all along!
Never regretted fitting the ssk, and would still happily recommend it.
I admit that this is track day use as opposed to competition, but IIRC the OP had no intention of racing.
If you were racing, of course you would rip the box out completely in favour of a sequential item!!!!
The view that the ssk somehow makes it worse for track work is not uncommon, but I must say, (for me at least) the ssk only improved matters.
I dont know about the 997 kit, but it does sound like a good way forward - the 997s I have driven have a very good selector. I must admit, I think mine is the OPC 996 Short shift kit, but it was a while ago that I had it fitted.
Wasnt mega expensive IIRC.

"Short shifters are like marmite""...not to bother ... unless he has specifically tried this out beforehand"

Just trying to save the OP some pain if he discovers he doesn't like it. Sounds like the 997 is the right way to go, but I urge him to try it first rather than fit it on the basis of forum chatter.
Edited to add: please note Stevo has the stock 997 shifter, not the ssk, so when the OP (I hope) tries out both, he should be sure to know which of the two he is sampling...
