I am looking to buy a second hand Boxster/S. First of all is the S worth the extra money? What do I have to watch for/faults etc? What are the specs to watch for that will make it more pleasureable and get return when it comes to resale. Will it get scratched/slashed every time I park it.....

Take a low spec S over a high spec 2.5 or 2.7 everytime.

Nobbles, I agree with Daz an "S" is the one, although it is more expensive than a 2.7 you get the following extra in the price...
3.2 litre uprated engine (the Boxter NEEDS this extra!)
6 speed gear box
uprated 911 spec brakes
uprated suspension set up
air con
alloy grab handles & dials & "S" decals etc
improved roof insulation (pre-facelift)
17 inch wheels.

the only extra you NEED is an uprated sound pack as the standard is crap, beyond that it's all down to creature comforts & cosmetics....like 18 inch wheels, sports heated seat's,PSM stability control, full leather etc etc. One quick point the plastics can be a little "low grade" if you buy a car that hasn't had full leather fitted (which was an expensive extra) stick to a black interior otherwise the dash & doors can look a little "low rent".
best of luck.

...just to add - PSM (not PCM!) is a VERY wise safety option which IMHO is virtually essential. May save you from serious injury/death if you enjoy hooning around on road (when conditions permit, of course) or track.

You simply MUST get the S. The S brings the 0..60 time down below six seconds to 5.7 and it has uprated brakes and 17" wheels as standard. It stops, goes and even turns just that little bit better than its smaller brother.

Essential items on the spec for preserving resale value are:

Wind Deflector. On Board Computer.
Full Leather.
Sound pack (speakers in the door, better amp).
PSM. (Some would argue about this but it cannot be retro-fitted)

Don't combine sports suspension with 18" wheels.

My spec was:

Full Leather
Gearstick in Aluminium Leather
Sports Heated Seats
Litronic Headlights
Sound Pack
Wind Deflector.
PSM
18" Sport Design Wheels (so cool...)
On Board Computer.

You don't need the hardtop now that the car comes with a heated glass rear screen as standard.

If buying a used S pre MY03 check the quality of the plastic rear screen...it will certainly need polishing and may need to be replaced which is not cheap.
