Hi Chaps,

So, what's the point of a GT2 ? Pretty much everyone that seems to have an opinion, appears to think that to all intents and purposes, the GT3 is a better drivers car. This goes for 996 and 997 models. Yet, the GT2 is significantly more expensive.

Now, I kind of get the point of a Turbo; it's got a certain kudos of it's own and a heritage. As a young boy, I had a poster of a 911 turbo on the wall - and I still intend to buy one. It's a heart thing, not a head thing.

So, is the GT2 just an exercise for Porsche to make the fastest straight line 911?
I think surely not, but if *it is*, why do people buy them?

I'm not a troll - this is an honest question.

997 GT2 is one of the fastest cars on the roads both in terms of straight line and through the bends...having had a 997 GT3 (great car but too crashy), 997 TT (great car but a little porkie and likes to understeer) to now be a 997 GT2 for me is the pinnacle of owning a Porsche...the GT2 is incredible to look at, devastingly fast on a track, every time you open the taps it is like igniting a rocket, but the way Porsche have evolved the car it is now a rocket that is more controllable and expolitable come rain or shine, come straight or bend, come track or road...driving a GT2 is motoring nirvana...each GT2 owner is a member of an exclusive club of Petrolheads...each having had a GT2 moment where man and beast have bonded together to surpass expectations and deliver a truly amazing performance and therefore feeling. In 997 form the GT2 is comfortable and composed and easy to drive everyday...almost rendering thr Turbo and GT3 obselete as it combines the track skills of the GT3 and the continent crushing skills of the Turbo in one car...rather than looking at it as expensive it is should be perhaps be viewed as cheap as it is two such accomplished cars in one!

I personally feel that any GT2 whether 993, 996 or 997 is always the best looking car in the model range...mean, moody, butch, aggresive...having had 4 Porkers the GT2 is the first one where people will stop and photograph it, come and ask questions, and point at it as it drives along...those that know about them and their history always respect these cars for the amazing feat of enginerring that they are.

Any Porsche is a great car...the GT2 is a truly special car!

+ 1..... brilliantly put.

Also have a look at a DR article.
http://magazines.drivers-republic.com/driversrepub...

Far from just being a straight line missile (which it is with a built in uncanny (unique for a 911 apart from the new GT3) stability at 200mph) it has lapped the ring the fastest of any production 911 and a couple of seconds behind the CGT.

The 997 GT2 will undoubtably be a collectors Porsche for the future with its limited numbers (helped by the credit crunch) it will probably be the last 911 with the "GT1" engine and it is the best 911 ever made IMO

eek I thought the whole point of 4wd on a turbo was to be able to transfer the relatively narrow power band onto the road through all four driven wheels.

From what I read on here the GT2 certainly has some devoted followers, but agree that the GT3 is probably the better car - or at least the better 911, and would be my choice.

Clarkson hated the GT2 and, although his views are pretty controversial, there is often a logical foundation to his conclusions.

He preferred the Lambo that was so much of a drivers car that in his opinion a dog could drive it...if he was presenting a proper car show as a motoring journalist rather than a light entertainment presenter in the ilke of Ant and Dec then I would perhaps respect his opinion...however proper journalists like Chris Harris love the GT2 in whatever incarnation it is and the racing driver/presenters like Plato adore them too!

Couldn't give a toss what Clarkson thinks I'm gonna get one before to long. I can't think of anything as quick and relatively relaible for the sought of purchase price that these cars are available second hand.

Clarkson Porsche full stop, pretty much

And there is no logical foundation to his conclusions, aas almost every time the Porsche comes out on top but he still recommends the alternative merely because its not a Porsche

Well, it's not just Clarkson, to be fair.

I'm an avid reader of both Car and Evo magazines, and they (generally speaking) are major Porschephiles - both magazines rate the GT2 below the GT3 in terms of driver involvement.

IIRC, Car declared the new 997.2 GT3 "the ultimate 911"

I admit the GT2 looks cooler with all the bodykit etc. but how many people have actually had the opportunity to drive both (of the same evolution) and can really say the GT2 justifies the, 30-40k or so price differential (this could be inaccurate)

I felt that asking people who knew and care and actually drive these cars day to day would be more informative than reading between the lines of the pages of a magazine. And I'm genuinely interested in what people think differentiates these cars materially. That's probably why.

With alot of these journos you have to look at the context that they are writing the story - is it for best track car or best continent destroying car or shopping car or posing car or value for money or raw feeling or bang for buck?

The beauty of the 911 range is that there is a car to suit most tastes...all of them are epic and all are dream cars...buying a car is far more than the money it costs - its the value in the way it makes you feel...for some they get value in how the thing looks (Lambo/Fez for example), some in how it feels like a raw race car (GT3), some for how it allows them to make rapid progress so easily (Turbo) and some for being just being a Porsche...for me and I guess for many GT2 owners the GT2 is the car that does all these...being a turbo as well it also very tuneable...something that the GT3's in terms of power do not offer...
