I've Just bought a 993 and although I originally decided I'd made a massive mistake and
wanted to sell it, however now that I'm used to it I love it... especially in the wet, what a
car.
My question is this, why is the 993 so much quieter than the older 911's is there any way to
improve the growl to what I'd expect without invalidating the warranty or spending more
than a few hundred pounds?

Well, there's always the Motorsound (or drilled) airbox, if you want more induction noise - drilling cheaper, Motorsound factory - available from many sources. The intake temperature probably goes up a little, so you may sacrifice bhp for noise.

Various exhaust options - only totally stock look would be RSRs, available from carnewal-europe.com - these are modified originals which get a high satisfaction level from users, come on a sale or return basis.

You could always get a Le Mans CD, play it into headphones from your walkman ......

Cheers, Maurice

Check out this months '911 & Porsche world' mag , there is an article in there about this problems and they too recommend RSR silencers.

Which older 911 would you prefer it to sound like? I had a 3.2 Carrera SSE before my 993, which was nice but far less audible!

I find that the twin exhust outlets spread the noise much more evenly and the RSR`s really do help, without being OTT. The Porsche "Motorsound Pack" airbox cover helps a little, but beware of some other after market systems.

I have been told that there is someone now working on an exchange cat-by-pass system, based on the factory system (ala RSR)...Woo, sounds might be even better soon?

Drilling the airbox transformed the sound of my car. Above 4000rpm it made a fantastic growl.

Here is a link with a bit more info

www.pcarracing.homestead.com/airbox.html

There is a CAD tremplate for the holes you can download of the net, I tried looking for it just now but couldn't find it, but it is out there.

Other option is the Motorsound airbox. Either way it makes a great noise without RSR's or similar.

Thanks for all the info guys, two questions if you don't mind.
1, will the motorsound air box reduce bhp or is it just drilling that does this.
2, Would RSR's not invalidate my Porsche warranty?

Arran.

The Motorsound Pack (Sound Enhancement Package)Was developed by Porsche and is part of the Tequipment range it is half of part no. 000 044 200 00 which includes wider tail pipes for £382.98 plus VAT (it is cheaper elsewhere) I dont know about power loss, but it certainly adds little or no BHP!

The RSR exhaust boxes are made from original Porsche 993 rear silencers and involve the removal of internal baffles. If you look at them there is no external difference. I dont see how these would affect your warrenty but maybe you should ask Porsche direct?

The whole lots changes the noise and responsiveness of the car. I have both and they are better than my freinds after market performance system, which has horrible ressonnance at 3000-4000 RPM.

I had the RSR silencers on my car for a while, good product, you save a good few pounds in weight over the standard boxes.
The noise is an improvement, you get a popping and cakle on the overrun..the only thing that put me off was at 4500 rpm they were giving 104 db on a noise meter, this would have meant I would not be able to use the car on regular track days.Obviously not a problem if it is purely a road car.

Another way to improve the sound is to remove some of the sound deadening from inside the engine bay.

David Hype: do you know the make of the "aftermarket exhaust system" that resonates badly and to what car is it fitted?

I am trying to gather information about the best exhaust systems before I take the plunge. (I think I may go for a Roock system from JZ Machtech.)
