997 TPMS 'LEARNING'

Anyone know how long the system takes to 'learn' as Porsche put it after changing wheels/tyres?

In the manual it just says that it takes 'some time' and only happens during driving.

Does anything have to be done to start it 'learning'?

If it has not corrected itself after 20 or so miles, it is possible one of the sensors has either been damaged, or the system needs a reset as a half an hour job at an OPC. (Or somewhere with a system tester).

Thanks VR6. I think things are working but I may be interrupting the process by going through the on board menus before it has 'learned'.

What I did was swap the rears over to even out wear a bit (the tyres aren't directional). The system recognised this and went into some sort of check mode. I, assuming that maybe the system wouldn't recognise a moved sensor, swapped the wheels back, then went for a drive. The pressures all came up on the display, though they didn't look quite right, and the warning light was still on, but I only drove maybe 7/8 miles then got back home and played with the OBC again! Everything then seemed to go back to square 1!

I will take it for a decent run at lunchtime and see what happens.

Returned from a 30 mile drive. Tyre pressures all showing up as expected on OBC, showing monitoring is working, but warning light still on and when car stopped and switched back on message says TMC inactive.

Totally illogical control system to me. Seems to idicate that you need to do somehting but does'nt say what or how!

Go into the onboard computer and start the procedure by telling the car what tyres (winter/summer),what size they are,keep going until the end,then drive car,15mins should do it.

Done that Chris and, as I said, the pressure monitoring element is working but I get a message saying 'TPM Inactive' and the warning light stays on. All the pressures show on the screen so it seems the sensors are all OK.

To DSM2 did you sort TPM,if not i have found my 997 owners hand book,its says that once you start the learning process,you must continue through all of it,otherwise you have to start again.(I have just done it on a Cayman in 2 mins to go through the dash and ten mins on the road)

Seems to be some sort of fault. Took it to OPC on Friday, they just did what I have done and the warning light is still there. The sensors are reading, all 4 pressures show fine but still get the changed tyres' message on start up and thw warning light.

OPC says will sort it in the next week or two, car is in for first service.

Just wondering if there was a conclusion to this thread.

Got the same message that i can't get rid of after new front tyres.

Is it going to be a visit to the OPC ?

I am in the same situation - all working fine. 1 wheel/tyre off and now no TP displayed. After a month.

I have no idea but suspect at least one battery in a wheel pressure monitor is dead and that has thrown them all out?

Hope this helps if just a little. I remember couple years back when my TPMS light came on my turbo. As it happens the car was being used for a Total 911 shoot and the meeting place was Dovehouse Motors. The mechanic there plugged the car into the PIWIS and it showed which sensor was knackered through its operating temperature ( was off the charts) the others showed a rough battery life left so I had them all replaced. I got them on the web in the states from I think TPMS.com and went for the Huf/Beru OEM ones as the cheaper ones I had heard created problems. I got the local tyre people to fit the sensors on the wheels and I was still massively in front from OPC prices. It did take a heck of a long time before the system 'read' all the new sensors and the light went out. Perhaps you could of been unlucky and that just as you replaced one another has gone but as I said they can determine that very quickly which one.
