BOXSTER BRAKE PROBLEMS

Hi,
Can anyone help me please? My '97 Boxster has got an unusual problem with the brakes. Every now and again the brake pedal has no give in it and it feels like I've got no brakes (the car does eventually stop - just). The garage have said it's likely to be the inline valve in the braking system. Porsche have said this item has been redesigned..why ? I can not find any recalls for this item, yet why would Porsche change it ? Has anyone any ideas please or experienced a similar problem and can advise ?
