Hi, getting to know my RS after 4 days and 500 miles of ownership. Fantastic car, as you all know. The one thing I dont like is the hideous plank spoiler. Before you say why didn`t you buy the GT3 non RS instead, I nearly did, and may get the Gen 11 GT3 in the near future. I was wondering if there is a different spoiler to fit. Looking at pictures only, the new GT3 top spoiler might bolt to the bottom of the old RS spoiler? Any thoughts?
Cheers

That spoiler is there for a reason, trust me, you wouldn't want to drive at high speed without it.

Mucking about with it will change the balance of the car, as it is designed to balance a certain amount of downforce on the front of the car at the same time.

No idea why you don't like it, as goes with the rest of the car IMO, maybe better if you just get a Carrera S.

Here here, I think a bigger one may be a better option!!

(a) the spoiler is there for a reason
(b) the car will get killed on a valuation basis without it
(c) if you ever post pics of a GT3RS without the spoiler you will risk getting this forum closed from obscene comments!!!

Seriously, as others mentioned, and as P always says, "aerodynamic balance", I would never mess with that

Hi, and thanks for the comments. However, I did not say I was just going to remove it and not replace it! The new generation GT3 non RS spoiler I dont mind; so maybe I will buy a GT3 in due course. I know about downforces etc. and if I relaced it with a later spoiler that did the same job I might do that. I would like a smaller spoiler mounted higher up as in the gen 11. As for my not liking the spoiler, well that is my opinion and I am being honest. I might keep the spoiler on and pretend it`s not there! I do like how it drives, turns, stops etc.

But don't forget the spoiler creates downforce by channelling airflow, so you cannot just nick a spoiler off some other car (even another very similar 911 like the GT3) and expect it to behave the same because it is setup to deal with the airflow for a particular car shape.

That is very true, and that is why I am only looking at a correct replacement endorsed by Porsche, IF at all possible. So dont worry I am not going to Halfords! It is an interesting exercise for me. I have seen a Tequipment spoiler somewhere for this car, but not much info. I see the gen 11 RS has an even more radical design which has stirred up some discussion! The shape of the blade is nicer and the aluminium supports are growing on me slightly.

Skiddy, you are on a wind up, aren't you!

The most prominent feature of an RS is the rear spoiler! It is not subtle, but is ingrained in the DNA of the car...smile

I'm not trying to be rude skiddy as I like your choice in cars, but what part of the spoiler wasn't clear to you when you agreed to buy the car?!

Here we go. Right, I like most things about the car apart from the spoiler. I will grin and bear it I suppose, but just because I dont like the spoiler doesn`t mean I am going to overlook all the good points about the car. That`s all really. I dont want a C2S, as I want it as light as possible. I wouldn`t go and buy one just because it doesn`t have a spoiler. I have a friend with one and it is a lovely car, but as there is an RS, then that ticks more boxes.

I'm not sure there are any other Porsche spoilers that are designed for the RS, even a normal GT3 one will not work 'properly' because of the wider rear end of the RS.

If there are any 'official' ones (and even aftermarket ones) then they're likely to be Cup car type versions providing even more downforce and they certainly ain't going to be more subtle...

You could always remove it and sell it on eBay as a cool "Porsche Design" ironing board! biggrin

road car spoilers dont create downforce, they cut lift.

Yep that’s right, its there to keep the car position neutral, as the car accelerates the rear lifts and the spoiler pops up to counteract this keeping the weight on the rear tyres the same as at slower speeds, its doesn't increase the weight like an airfoil with a Gurney strip, which forces the rear down rather than preventing it coming up. If you push the rear down past the neutral position with a big airfoil then you need to do something at the front to stop that rising splitters are designed to move the airflow away from the tyres thus helping to some extent but you'd probably need to change them too to balance it or fit a front skirt.
