Sold my pork - here's my 996 ownership costs FYI
Discussion
Well last weekend was a sad occasion for me since I parted company with my trusty steed. I haven’t posted that much on here but I’ve spent many hours reading the forums and gained a lot of useful knowledge so it’s time to put a bit back I reckon.
I have seen many people ask about running costs, so now my car is no more (well to me anyway) here is a full breakdown of my costs of ownership (I have estimated some costs when I don’t have exact figures). I hope it will be of some use to any newbies out there who are thinking of buying.
Car: Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 4 Cab Tiptronic S
Year of manufacture 1999
Date of purchase 24 Apr 2007, Purchase price £24999
Date sold 19 Sept 2009, Price £14000 + old Audi A4 in px (say £15000 all-in)
Depreciation £10000 over 29 months = £345/month
Mileage April 2007 = 44600, mileage Sept 2009 = 70550, total mileage = 25950
Therefore approx cost of fuel = £4800 (based on average 24mpg say and £1/litre)
Approx road tax = £200/year * 2.5 years = £500
Approx insurance costs £2000
Servicing and maintenance:
24th May 2007: Rear Tyres Michelin Pilot Sport £305
5th July 2007: New footrest and vanity mirror unit from Porsche Apart £28.20
5th July 2007: New coolant tank and window regulator £452.38
21st July 2007: Wheel refurbishment £188
3rd Sept 2007: New Battery £63.95
27th Oct 2007: Suspension track control arm £229.13
28th Jan 2008: Air-con radiator £267.66
6th Feb 2008: Major service, front discs/pads, MOT £800.53
13th Jun 2008: PSE C4S 2nd hand exhaust boxes off eBay £40 (bargain)
23rd Jun 2008: Replace ignition coils and exhaust £331.35
14th Sept 2008: Rear tyres £330
23rd Jan 2009: MOT £40
16th Mar 2009: Minor service and some repairs £656.08
24th Apr 2009: Handbrake switch £64.98
21st June 2009: Rear Tyres £260
21st July 2009: Replace cooling fan resistors and fit new window regulator £423.20
18th Sep 2009: Gearbox sump gasket leak £187.45
Therefore total service and maintenance costs = £4667.91
Ownership cost summary:
Service and maintenance + depreciation + road tax = £15167.91
This works out as 58p/mile or £523/month
If you include fuel and insurance (which varies from person to person) but in my case total costs = 15167.91+2000+4800= £21967.91
This works out as 85p/mile or £758/month.
I have to say that generally speaking the car was a great motor, I always fixed small problems when they arose (to avoid big bills later) apart from the RMS, which as mine had just a weep, I just lived with it as it used hardly any oil.
For the record the max speed I had out of it was 160 on the clock, when it took it for a hoon on the Autobahn!
Anyway, happy days of pork ownership, I may just return in the future, once I’ve scratched that Italian itch…..
Happy motoring guys!

Well some of the stuff at the start needed doing when I bought the car, I bought privately and obviously no warranty so I paid me money and took me chances!
It never let me down though, apart from when the battery died and car wouldn't start. I was shocked at how much I lost in depreciation though. I thought that getting an 8 year old 911 wouldn't continue to lose much, but then then credit crunch hit......bugger

Well I was a bit shocked when I totalled it all up, but at least I earn enough to cover the costs of ownership, which is a blessing. I wouldn't try and run such cars on a budget, not that I am rolling in it of course! (Well not now anyway lol). I have to say though that the car was in better condition when I sold it, then when I bought it. I sold it to a friend and was up front about all the costs and such and I even explained about potential issues re RMS/IMS so he could buy with open eyes.
Still sad to see it go but the missus has given me clearance to buy a 10(ish) year old Fezza (I want a 355 but she likes the 360, so I'm expecting a battle). Next time I will get a PPI first. I was very naive when I bought the Porsche, but I sure learned a lot!

Yes, previous ownership impacted greatly upon me. The previous guy I think just ran it for a year and didn't spend anything on it. However, it was 2-3 grand cheaper than the others for sale at that time and so I kind of figured I would have to spend some cash on it. I didn't mind though, as it kept my initial purchase cost to a minimum and I fixed other bits and pieces as time went by.
I agree completely about maintaining cars and am meticulous about oil, filters, plugs, etc on all my cars, but how do you set about "looking after" things like window regulators and fan resistors?
We're all quite happy to pay for service items, discs, pads and tyres, but Porsches seem to need a lot of other items; radiators, suspension parts, etc, well before one would expect to be replacing them.

I think you let it go a little cheaply, considering the mileage and all the work you have had done on it. But I guess when the time came to sell you didn't want to have it hanging around and probably did the right thing to move it on as fast as possible. Must be a slightly bitter pill though to think that someone else will be reaping the benefits of the money you have put in to it.

Well I'm not too bothered TBH - its just the way it goes. I sold it to a friend so I wanted it to be right anyway. If I was trading it in, I probably wouldn't have spent what I did in the last few months, knowing I was going to trade it, but then I would have got less back from the dealer anyway.....swings and roundabouts. The deal was good for me as I now have the money in the bank waiting the right motor to come along.
It could have been worse, at least my engine didn't go bang!

I feel I have to put a balancing veiw as I have had myC4S for nearly a year and 8000 miles and other than a new battery its been as good as gold, the rear tyres have got 2 or 3000 miles left in them and that includes a track day at Castle Combe. The car was in A1 condition with new tyres an brakes when bought at 29000 miles last year from Westover sportscars in Poole, and has had a service at 36000 which was £300 at Autosrasse at Coggeshall (reccomended)
Petrol costs are similar to the OP and insurance is approx £700( I am 57 with full no claims). The car runs on Mobil1 and uses NO oil and I have noticed the oil keeps very clean on the dipstick.
The only extra costs have been a rear wheel refurb at £50 and some minor dinks removed on the rear wing caused by the previous owner resting something on it which cost £75 (my mate is a car broker and these are trade beer token prices)
