On a recent post someone overfilled their car with oil. We get it with customers from time to time so a little tip :

Don`t worry too much about keeping the level on your interior guage or dipstick filled to the brim. Mid way is usually fine. That will allow for a bit of expansion if things heat up.

Don`t forget the bottom mark of the dipstick isn`t empty. The dipstick measures maybe a couple of litres or so of the total capacity of 13 to 14 litres of oil in the engine.

Anyone who`s had the good fortune to lose a front oil cooler pipe on an early car will be able to testify the engines run fine even with the side of your car coated in Mr Castrol`s finest. Indeed most people only realise they have a problem when the front right brake decides oil is a lubricant and the car veers to the left on dropping the anchor.

Driving one of the first 911`s I ever bought home I went up a hill from picking it up, there was a clicking sound and a dense cloud of smoke behind me. Given those were my formative years with less than a very small amount of money in reserve I was just getting ready to re-apply for my old job back at Maccy dee`s. Fortunately the old boy had just thought he`d pop in a couple of litres to help me out before I picked the car up from his house. An hour later and all was back on track for a future in the motor trade!

Keep smiling

Henry

any ideas on what oil to use - I normally use Mobil Motorsport in my Caterham, is this suitable for my 993 C4?

Yes.

(Search archives, subject done to death, but consensus seems to be that 15w50 Mobil 1 Motorsport is prob best, if not pricey).
