Hi guys,
I've been driving the 1983 928 frequently, and as usual last night I worked late until the interstate cleared up and I buzzed home at my usual speed of around 80-mph. All was well. Car drives fine.

This morning I fired up the car and drove in for a cup of coffee on the way in, and while I was at the drive up window I heard a noise. I was sure it was coming from the other car, but no, this time it was me! Yikes!

I pulled over and popped the hood and heard a mechanical noise coming from the front of the motor. (I recently had the timing belt replaced)

It sounds like a combination of a vibration/rattle/grind. It's a mechanical sound. It's not a knocking sound like a bearing went out, nor is it a ticking sound like a lifter, and my oil pressure is fine. It almost sounds a bit like the air pump when it went out, but that was a continuous "grind". This is coming from the front of the motor, and it may well be coming from the rollers or timing gear, etc. The motor runs great, and had it not been for the drive up window amplifying the sound, I would have never probably heard it due to the drone of the motor coming out the tailpipe.

Naturally, I checked the oil and oil is fine. I immediately drove back home, round trip this morn was about 5-miles. I called my mechanic and let him listen on the phont, but of course, it's nearly impossible to hear much on a cell phone held down into the motor compartment.

Now I'm faced with a dilemma, part of owning an older car of course. I will probably put the car on a car hauler and transport it to the mechanic.

Need some help with the diagnosis. Anyone have a clue??? My hunch is it's a timing belt roller or tensioner going out.

Well, I guess I did ask for some tips

I just lined up a 4-wheel car hauler trailer, and I'll pick it up tonight. I'm going to haul the 928 in with the Volvo 740 as the tow vehicle. I'm afraid of tearing up a timing belt roller or tensioner, and popping a bunch of valves. More on the story as it unfolds tomorrow.

Timing belt slipped a tooth as it/the tensioner was/were badly reinstalled ... ?

Roller bearing should not induce any vibration IMO, if noise certainly.

I had a water pump go shortly after replacing the timing & other belts on mine. Did you have the other belts replaced when you had the timing belt done?

My guess is that it's either an ancilliary that's gone wrong or, as you say, something to do with the timing gear?

Something that can sometimes work it to use a long screwdriver and press your ear to the handle end while touching the other end to various ancilliaries to see if it's one of them?

Good tips.

I was very "tempted" to drive it to the shop, but something just wouldn't let me do it. So last night I borrowed a heavy 4-wheel car hauler trailer and hooked it up to the '89 Volvo 740 and loaded the 928 early this morning. I waited for traffic to die down and off we went.

The 928 weighs around 3400 pounds and the trailer must have weighed around 1,000. It rode pretty well until I had to use the brakes and I'm telling you, a Volvo sedan with 4,400 pounds behind it will heat the brakes up pretty quick.

I took it easy and got it to the shop, drove it off the ramp without scratching the spoiler. So now I'm waiting to find out what it was. My mechanic repeated something I've heard mentioned before, and he said the 16-v 928 like mine (mine is a 1983 model) is not an interference engine. Having heard that from him, I'm still not sure I would have driven the car in, it just didn't sound too happy. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

While the car is in, I'm having the transaxle rebuilt, so they're going to allow me to take some photos "for bragging rights". I'll post them here for everyone to see, and of course, I'll be an expert on 5-speed transaxles by then, lol.

Stay tuned for updates!

Here's an update:

The noise was traced to a camshaft drive gear, which was coming apart. It was torqued back down and all is well. Had it been springtime in Tennessee instead of 11 degrees out there, I would have taken the cover off and probably fixed this one myself, but not in this weather.

Because the car was also scheduled for transmission work, I thought "what the heck", I'll just haul it in.

The transmission needs a new main input shaft bearing, and I'm putting in all new synchros, along with a few new gaskets, etc. Price for everything is $2800 which I think is a fair price for removal, re-installation, and the repairs, including the fixing of the cam gear issue.

I had some rather minor wear on the second gear, itself. I could have replaced the second gear and layshaft together, which would have cost another $4300 but I don't think that would really affect the drivability in the next 100,000 miles.

Domster, yes, I'm kind of puzzled about that one, as I would have figured they would have checked it when they did the timing belt replacement just a short while ago. I guess you can't expect a mechanic to check every single bolt on the car.

It's sure going to be fun getting the shark back with a "new" transmission. Hide the women and children !!!!!!!!!!!!!
