Seen a 98 (S) 996 at Northway, it's silver with blue leather.
18in rims, sports pack, sunroof, 38,000 miles. £33,495.
Does it sound good? The right sort of price?

Northway are a reliable bunch.

At that price it seems good value - I think you could easily pay £36 k for the same car at some dealers.

As ever, check its history carefully.

Is it 99 model year (usually Porsches MY goes from Aug/Sept- through to the end of July/Aug so an Aug 98 car should be 99 MY, but it may not be, could just be registered later) if so sounds a fair price from a dealer. 99My added clear lights,Posips side impact protection & a few other tweeks as standard equipment, including a slightly louder exhaust. The sports pack was a great extra, from what I remember it had sports suspension, sports seats, traction control & 18 inch turbo look wheels...tasty.
Aside from Topstuffs good advice also check it is either a Uk main dealer supplied car or C16 Uk spec car.

Thanks people, I was going to wait a few months before I took the plunge, but this seems right up my street. I'm tempted!
The guy at Northway said that traction control is PSM, is this correct?

Make sure you don`t speak to Sean, even uglier than Ray if that`s possible !

Very honest people, ask them and they will tell you the truth. Ray is a good man with a lot of experience and feet firmly on the ground. Sean`s feet are firmly on the ground too but that`s because he`s got flat feet !

Only kidding - have enjoyed more than a couple of beers with them both over the years.

And that friendly recomendation comes from one of their competitors !!!!

Send them my love if you visit.

Er!!! Really don't think it is PSM...The PSM system first came in on the 996 C4 which was available from '99 model year, infact the earliest i have seen is a 12/98 car.
PSM was available as an extra on the C2 months later.
If this is a '98 car and a C4 it will have PSM. if it is a C2 as i suspect then it will more than likely have the mixture of abd and traction control carried over from the 993.Although this is ok ish it is not in the same league as PSM.
If you look on the dash you should see a PSM light glowing on the main display when you turn the ignition on,there should also be an oval PSM on/off switch on the dash.
The car sounds fairly priced and has some good options, just make sure it has the extras you are told it has.
If you look under the front luggage compartment, there is the build sticker, you can find the option codes there. good luck

Crikey. Learn something new everyday. I didn't know there was a difference between traction control and PSM on early 996 C2s.

Just spoke to a freind who owned a 996. He said that the Sports Package did NOT come with the 10mm lowered springs/suspension. I've also heard it called the 10mm sports chassis. Is it all the same thing, and is it included in the Sports Package??

Thanks, this forum has been of great help.

I'm 99% certain that the sports pack included the 10mm lowered suspension as part of the package. I used to own a 1998 Carrera 2 & this had the sports pack, it also had the 10mm sports suspension.

I'll take your word for it. It was just one of my freinds many cars over the years. I wouldn't call him a Porsche enthusiast.

The car was in an OPC in 99 for repair to body damage on the drivers door. Is there any way of telling if this was a scratch, or a side impact with a bus?

Jonjo, If it was fixed by an OPC, it will have been issued a Porsche Lifetime Guarantee, subject to an annual inspection and stamp, this repair should never fail. PCGB should have it on file against the car`s chassis nunber. They should be able to access a duplicate of the work order, invoice and repair details.

See if the Lifetime Guarantee booklet is with the cars history, check that it has been kept upto date. If it has, you are more than well covered, what ever was done.

TKD, if it was me & I was a little unsure about the
car I would pay for an OPC check over, it should only cost you around £150 & the garage shouldn't mind if the car is straight. I've done this before & it should give you peace of mind on the accident etc. Just a thought.

I'm planning to have an OPC check on any car I seriously consider. I also plan on having a Porsche warranty put on the car as I've heard they are excellnt and well worth the money.

My main problem is getting the time to go look at it!
I'm so busy at the moment, and whilst this is what is paying for the car, it's a nightmare trying to find the time.

I had a bit of a play with a N reg 993 yesterday on my way back from Swindon. Seeing as my next car will be a 911 I was hoping he would pull away. Alas, it was soundly beaten and we were both dissapointed.
Is a 3.4 996 much quicker than a 993?

Again, thanks for the replies, they have been an excellent help. I will keep you posted on my progress.
