911 type 915 gearbox replace/rebuild cost???

Hi All,
I hope some one can help me? I have a 356 rep with a 911sc 3L and a type 915 box in it the engine is sound but the box isn't the best!! Syncro has gone in most gears (1st and 3rd going up and 4th coming down) I would like to replace or fave the box rebuilt but get very different info from each garage I contact has any one had this done? what did it cost? recommend a good garage? I'm in Nottingham. Thanks

My 1981 911 sc 915 gearbox had exactly the same problem. £2500 all in at a Porsche specialist in Surrey but their name escapes me now. Did a good job as well.

The rebuild cost for a 915 is £1000 - £2000 depending how many synchros, dogs and bearings need replacing, plus engine removal and replacement, plus what else needs doing while the engine is out; possible clutch, heater boxes, fuel lines etc. etc.

As Nick says about £1500 sounds about right for the state of your box

Thanks for that. I have had quotes for upto £3000 max they say until its out and stripped its hard to say! But I found a place in Kent called Belwoods said they could put me a recon box in for £1750+vat and do it in four days with a 12month unlimited mileage warranty. Does it sound to good to be true?

£2500 sounds nearer the truth. But until its stripped, inspected and the damage surveyed, no one can put a price on it.

I had the 915 box in my SC race car re-built at least twice: once because it baulked exiting Russell at Snet when in the lead on the last lap, I desperately fished for gears and got 1st and stripped the teeth off (I finished 3rd, gutted ) and the other time(s) due to tired (/abused) synchros etc.

During one rebuild a new fork of some kind was required - they were no longer available but the garage doing the job sourced one from Germany somewhere so the box could be re-built completely correctly to the right standard. It could have been left without that part and still been classed as a durable, serviceable fully-rebuilt unit, which would have cost less too, but I didn't want a compromise.

Parts prices have increased quite a bit in the last year or so due to the exchange rate so whilst it used to be circa £1000 for a rebuild it's now nearer £1500.

It should feel noticably tight when freshly done and then wear-in nicely (perhaps 1000 miles or so, can't judge based on road mileage really ao I'm guessing a little).

On a related note, the other thing to consider is fitting a Wevo shifter. I don't know how long these have been available but they weren't allowed for our race series when I raced the SC. They are now and I believe work very well.

Whats a Wevo shifter? & whats it do?

Start price £1500 budget up to £3.5 including vat.
Every gearbox is never the same condition wise.
