Apologies if this has been done before but I am thinking about a GT3 as a fun road car. I am very new to the 911 thing, no idea if this is a realistic road car, where I should go to look for them other than my local OPC (Silverstone), what I should pay if I want second hand rather than new, what I should look out for, etc.

I would really appreciate any advice. The car will probably not be taken on track all that often as I will be keeping my SR3, but I do want a maximum thrills road car that can also be used for the occasional trip to the south of France with a couple of weekend bags, that sort of thing.

Andrew,
it's a hard one to answer as it all depends on what you want in car. Personally I think the GT3 is a fabulous car, but it is designed to give it's best on a race track & is a little too "hardcore" as a daily car.30mm lowered rock hard suspension that will blur your vision on a B road, twitchy tail, no PSM etc.
But some of the guys on Pistonheads run very hardcore stuff every day & love them, ok they are on forst name terms with their dentist, but they have seem to have great fun between drillings (only joking chaps ...honest, he say's putting his tin hat on!) .

My advice is to go to OPC Silverstone & try out a few different models to see what suits you best.
If possible try out a carrera2/C4S/Turbo & Gt3 all of which you can afford on your budget if you are talking about a new style GT3. If you prefer the C2 , wait for the new 997, otherwise there is a world of S/H Porkers out there to choose from.

As the saying goes one mans meat is another poison.

GT3 is superb car. We have coverered 3000miles since July. It is comfotable enough for weekend car down to south of France (better than 355). Ride is hard but worth it for amazing performance.

Yeah, I reckon it is fine everyday (ground clearance is the trickiest thing probably). Budget 40k upwards. They are soft compared to the 964RS

The 996tt is much better as an everyday proposition tho'.

As one of lifes eternal optimists even I am put in the shade compared to Domster. "Budget £40k upwards" says Dom. For a good RHD GT3 it needs to be a lot upwards.

Irrespective of one only LHD in Circuit Driver in Octfor c£40k, it's gone. New ones are £75k+ and sold out.

A survey carried out in Dec indicated that 10 x RHD Mk1 GT3 were avail & still fetching avg of c£58k with the lowest at £53k [33,000 miles & wrong wheels] and the highest at £63k7300 miles & mint]
[excluding the 4000 mile car at Lancasters for £69k]

So budget in high £50's for a good car and a little more for an exceptional car.

I am indeed an optimist. Upwards was the operative word and I do subscribe to circuit driver

50k is a more realistic starting point, granted. I have heard of a doggy LHD one for 35k in the last few months though, so bargains, ex race cars and desperate sellers may exist. You tend to get what you pay for though.

I was looking at these on www.mobile.de quite remarkable value for money. Yellow CS with red seatbelts would be nice........

As has been suggested by others, drive a few different 996. Both 2 and 4WD, also the different suspension options need considering. There is an awful lot of variety out there.

The steering wheel and the wheels spoil that car. Not a bad price though.

Both of those really easy to fix though.

I am tempted - but a little too hardcore for me.

Thanks.

Interested by the hardcore comment though. I've just arranged a test drive with my local OPC, and said I would also like to try a C4S in case the GT3 is also too hardcore for mostly road driving.

Was I naive to expect a "why certainly sir, after all it is a lot of money and we want you to enjoy spending it with us"?

What did they do/say?

I suppose the GT3 is the hardcore choice, but a C4S is still a lovely car and not far off in price.

Maybe they think you are a timewaster who doesn't know his own mind (after all, GT3 is chalk to C4S cheese in many ways), or just a big jessie who cries if his cupholders wobble too much over speedhumps?

Either way it seems they are not giving you the respect you deserve as a member of Pistonheads...

I explained as I have an SR3 the Porsche wouldn't see much track use but I wanted a car as extreme as I could get away with for road use, trips to France, etc. with occasional foray on track.

I said I've taken advice from a number of existing GT3 owners, some of whom said it will be fine as a mainly road car, others who've said try the C4S as well.

I can understand they don't want tyre kickers, neither would I, but since they are happy to give me a test drive of the GT3 already, I can't see what the issue is letting me try another car while I am there.

LOL!

I really want to try the Porsche thing, GT3 ideally.

If only the bl**dy OPCs could get their fingers out and help. I know GT3s can probably sell themselves without somebody having to go to all that bother of giving some punter a test of TWO cars, but hey, if that's a hard day at the office put me down for a job.

Jeremy, stop leading people astray.

My crystal ball tells me you will be trading in the Cerbie for a 996 Turbo in 2005 anyway
