Hi all,

I haven't posted in the porsche section before but have been dreaming whilst revising for my finals (yes, I'm bored smile) and started looking at 911s in the classifieds. I love the look of the 993 and 997 but not so much the 996 (which is now a bargain!!) because to me, the headlights don't look as good as they do on the 997 or 993, which got me onto wondering, does this bother anyone else, and if so, has anyone ever done a conversion? From the shape, it looks like it would be possible to change the front lights to those of a 997 if you were any good at bodywork but I'm no expert....just interested in the general opinion.

When the 997 first came out there were various attempts to get the 997 look onto the 996. There was a chap either on here or on 911uk that did it.

It is neither going to be cheap or desireable so would only end up being money wasted. But it's not an unusual thing to do. There was a time when it was almost common to take and older 911 (3.2 and SCs) and fit 964 bumpers/skirts. Sadly when you look inside one of these cars it is obvious that it is an older car. Of course the older cars were a lot easier to modify like this as the underlying structure hardly changed in the first 33 years that the 911 was around.

This is no longer the case since the 993 and so it is more expensive.

These days the trend is take a modern car (964, 3.2, SC) and make it look like a pre 1974 or pre impact bumber car. These can command quite a premium if done correctly.

Some people have done this on here, but you would not recoupe the cost of the conversion and it would still be a 996. In fact, it could actually reduce the value of the car, as most Porsche (Not all!) buyers want originality. It would be cheaper (total cost of ownership) to just buy a 997 in the first place which would be worth more at resale. This would justify a initial larger loan.

Really? Even considering a 996Turbo is half the price of a 997Turbo right now?

You would have to do the full bumper conversion as the 996 lights also have the side lights built into them... I personally wouldn't do it, but I am very much "each to their own"... if you like it then do it!

First link looks quite good, second one though.... rofl

Thanks for all the info guys, it was more out of curiosity as to whether anyone else was like me and prefers the looks of the 997/993 to the 996. Unfortunately I'm still a student and a long way off being able to afford a 996 or otherwise frown
