Discussion
Hi People, recently sold my TVR Cerbera and am interested in a Boxster. Was thinking within the range below 20,000 for a purchase which leaves me with something in the region 98' but with higher mileage.
Any comments, suggestions or help from the people on this group.
(Before you ask, the TVR was a nightmare hence the selling.)

After a Cerbera I dont think you could live with the BHP drop ? If you believe that you can, a far better bet [IMHO]than a well used 2.5 Boxster would be a 2002 Honda S2000 glass rear screen model. It is still RWD, no traction control, 240 BHP, revs to the moon, Electric hood + possibly buy a GT with factory hardtop. Phenominal reliability, cheap servicing etc etc.
Try on www.s2ki.co.uk they have a for sale section

Totally agree, S2000's are an excellent proposition for 20k, better car than a 2.7 Boxster never mind the 2.5
Hell, for 20k you can get a nice LHD 964Turbo3.3, mayber even a 3.6turbo2 if you're lucky, e.g.

Just think: no more wobbly bits of glassfibre, electrics that resemble something from A.I. or engines that melt faster than a chocolate condom
Or even an ex-cup 964...
Damn, now you've got me looking at car adverts again!

Yep. The sports car enthusiasts choice for that money is the S2000 no doubt about it - this from a Boxster S owner....
P.S. Love the Boxster. Fantastic car. You wouldn't regret getting one. But when you compare an old 2.5 with a newer S2000 you'd be nuts not to get the Honda - its a great car for a lot less money...

Can't be arsed quoting everyone, but I have some reasonons for the boxster, about 4 years ago I wanted a boxster, but came across a TT 225 etc instead, loved the car, loved driving it (bring on the arguments) however my wife was car-jacked, pulled out of car type thing, so lost that car (wife ok, don't worry all worked out fine).
Then came to next car (which frankly took about 8 months as scared of getting another 'sports' car) and my wife found a TVR Cerbera, 6 years old, but nice.
Car was nothing but trouble (had it 8 weeks, drove it for 1) bad luck all round, can't really fault the TVR, I went in to it with my eyes WIDE open, but was still surprised by how much you have to look after it.
As a result i've gone back to my original fantasy of owning a Porsche. Always wanted one, and I do like the look of the Boxster, and never had a soft top car, which would be good (on another note are they all electric tops?).
So, I had a go in a S2000, and although I liked the drive etc (bit too cramped inside IMHO, but I could be classed as a bit of a biffa), it wasn't a porsche, silly reasons, for a silly world, for possibly a silly person.
Maybe I need to get it out my system.

PS On the car-jacking, just to plead a bad case worse, my wife had popped to a shopping mall on the way from work and had in her handbag passports, driving licence work keys home keys and our original marriage certificate. The marriage certificate was the hardest pill to swallow. From what little information we did get (this is not a gripe at the police I might add, they were more than excellent) the car was reckoned to be in Cyprus within 24 hours.

Sorry to hear that Chris, but glad everyone was OK. Helpful tip from defensive driving instruction:
1. Make sure the area is safe before approaching your car
2. Look in the back of your car before getting in (perp hidden in rear footwell)
3. Look around rather than looking at handbag/key/lock/etc.
4. (v.important habit) first thing you do when you get in the car is _not_ put the key in the ignition but close and lock the doors. Doors remain locked until you reach destination always always always.
Not much use in a cabrio of course

Horse, stable door etc. but hopefully it may be of help to others.

OK. All Boxsters are cabrios. If you've never had one you will either love it, and go roof down in ludicrous conditions

The roof is indeed electric. 12 seconds to retract or raise.
Items you should have on your shopping list:
* Wind Deflector - Boxsters look weird without this. Amazingly some cars are ordered without. Buy one with it.
* 2.5 Boxsters did not come with A/C as standard. However there was an option informally called the "Lux" pack which gives you Climate Control. You want this. A/C on a cabrio, you ask? Oh yes - humid wet days in summer the A/C will clear the windscreen and keep the cabin comfortable. Also motorway cruising is best done with the roof up....unless you are me and are a bit

* 16" wheels look a bit...poverty spec. Try to find one with 17" wheels. DO NOT GET 18" wheels. 18" wheels were not fitted by Porsche on the Boxster until MY01 (I believe) and never to the 2.5 - the car is not set up for them and ride will be adversely affected.
Also be aware that the options list on a new car is long and expensive. These options carry their value most of the way down the depreciation curve...
Anything else you want to know about Boxsters just ask...either I'll know or GregE240 will...

Thanks for the info, all very very helpful.
What about details between the engine sizes, Boxster 2.5, S, 2.7 etc
Anything to tell them apart, should I be going for the big one, or does it matter?
As you can tell I'm not much up on Porsche car's, but i'm learning, slowly i'll admit, but learning none-the-less

They are all pretty strong.
Get a 2.7 if possible over a 2.5 - you will notice the difference. Always get one with a good history. Some have had a record of a few oil leaks, and also make sure the cam belt thing is changed if the mileage is high.
An issue to be aware of is the plastic window on the soft top. A rare example of german design gone a bit iffy - you will notice that the plastic window folds in half when you put the roof down. After time, and especially if the temperature is cold ( like a bright winters day) it is not uncommon for the plastic window to split when the roof goes down. Its very expensive to fix - a new roof is required.

Good tip, i'll keep an eye out for that.
I take it there is no Boxster FAQ?
I found this site, which i'm sure people here will have seen:

Actually it IS possible to have just the clear plastic section of the roof replaced. On older cars there is often a tiny split at the fold on each side of the window.
Basically the window should not be operated unless the plastic is at least 5 degress Celsius...and should always be "helped" to fold in two on closing with the "Boxster Chop" - getting out of the car and pushing at the middle of the window from behind to ensure it folds properly..
MY03 cars onwards (which will still be expensive) are fitted with a glass rear window which does not suffer from the plastic one's problems.
2.7 and 3.2 (in the Boxster "S") litre engines were introduced some years after the 2.5 - and so will be much more expensive.
If you can increase your budget you will enjoy getting a Boxster S - which is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than the 2.5 and still a step up from the 2.7.

If you want a Boxster FAQ try over at www.boxa.net quite a lot of info if you look deep enough
To avoid the back window from splitting, according to porsche you have to convert it half way, get out the car and press the back windows to form a crease. Then get in and carry on converting. Once this has been done a few times it will find its own line. failure to to this will and i stress will result in a cracked or creased windows. Try not to convert during the cold mornings as it shatters! I had a new window installed 8 month ago and it still is perfect! no marks at all!
Ask your local porsche dealer for help.

How much did the new rear window cost?

Is 18"'s on a 2.5 really a no no then?
Can they be 'set up' easily?
I've seen loads with 18" turbos over the years.

No Lads, you're all barking up the wrong tree. Buy a 968 Sport and stick one of our blowers on it, that way you will get a 350bhp TVR beater for less than 20K and have a car that you can use everyday without bits falling off.
Listen to this man ! He knows he does !
Or get a LHD 964. Come on !
