What would you do?

I`ve owned my 993 C2S for six and a half years now, and apart for a couple of months over winter (when I buy a cheap runaround), it is my only car. I use it for commuting, visiting, shopping and, more importantly, the family holidays. So far, it has been to Scotland, the Lakes, Wales, North Yorkshire Moors and Dales, Norfolk, Kent, Derbyshire, Cornwall, The Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands (three times) as well as the occasional weekend away. I still think it looks the dogs danglies and I love the fact that it has retained most of the money I paid for it. Now, my dilemma. My son is now nearly fourteen and has had a huge growth spurt this last year with the result that he no longer fits in the back...!!! In October, we popped up to John`O`Groats and had to go in the wifes V50 diesel, and although we had a great time, it wasn`t the same as if we`d been in the Porsche. A couple of years ago I had a 997 C4S on loan for a couple of weeks and we were all surprised by the amount of extra headroom in the cabin. Even though my wife is hardly short (5` 6") she was able to sit quite comfortably and acceptably in the back...... Would you sell the 993 and buy a 997 bearing in mind that I wouldn`t have to lay out much more for an early 997 or do I just accept the fact that until my son leaves home in five or six years time (maybe) it is now just a two seater. I know that no-one can forsee the future but I would be concerned about the 997 depreciating in value. Would I get over the 993??? ........Well, what would you do...?
I personally think with most cars if you're not able to take them out when you want then it's time to find a new car.
I want to enjoy my car all the time and to be honest the best fun I've had in my car is when I'm doing something mundane (shopping with family) but the opportunity arises which allows me to open the taps. It's this spontaneity which makes cars special in my mind, as opposed to getting into a mentality of "right i'm popping out to have some fun".
Whilst it's horses for courses - it's like going out with your mates and saying "i'm going out to have fun" , by setting up the mental expectation the experience itself invariably falls short.
However people are different and you may be the type who can get up on a saturday, go for a purpose made hoon and be gobsmacked - it's these difference which makes life interesting !
So in short, I would sell the car and move on...BUT...the only difference here is you're not going to experience serious depreciation I'm guessing on a 993 - which would probably make me feel a lot less guilty leaving it the garage ! Or keep the car if you don't need the spontaneity to enjoy it !

Whilst the 997 is a little bit bigger than the 993, if sonny carries on growing he will outgrow that as well. Besides, as he is almost 14, very soon, he will stop wanting to go on holiday with you. (trust me on this one!)
You'll get over that, but may never get over selling your air cooled P&J.
So keep the 993, you know you will regret selling it....
Solution 1.
On the very rare occasions you need to travel with more than 2 people, take 2 cars and go on holiday in convoy, and instead of the banger, you could for example buy your wife a cheapish 2 seater convertible (Audi TT, Z3, MX5 etc, or even an early Boxster?)
Solution 2.
Send the wife on the bus/train and meet her there.
You'll get over that, but may never get over selling your air cooled P&J.
So keep the 993, you know you will regret selling it....

Unless you are utterly in love with your 993 and want to never sell it, I would agree with the above.If you buy the 997 carefully, the depreciation wont be that bad and you may offset some of this with lower running costs than your 993. This of course depends what condition your 993 is in. Hows the paintwork, the engine, suspension etc etc etc.
And remember, youre situation is not too shabby all things considered!

Buy a caravan, hook it onto the back of the 993, place son in back of caravan. He can play his PSP and you and your lovely wife can enjoy a stress journey. Once at destination unhook caravan and enjoy the wonderful sound of a flat 6 in Britain's green a pleasant land.
Alternatively buy your son a Nova at tell him to make his own way there.....

You seem to actually drive the car which is a change from the usual 993 owner on here so you must be putting the miles on the car which makes me wonder what your car maybe worth as high mileage 993's do not seem to be holding there value as well as some on PH'c claim they do.
I would advise to go for a 997 C2S,quicker,better handling/braking,cheaper to run,more space,more comfortable with modern creature comforts for the longer journey's that you seem to take.
I am 6,2 and can fit into the rear of a 997 on shorter journeys. If you are talking about trips to the Channel Islands/Scotland etc then forget any 911 to be honest The 997 has more rear space but not to the extent that i think you are after. Plan B for keeping the 993 and buying a second car may be the answer.
