Depends where you are in the country. If you are anywhere in the south I would recommend Jon Mitchell Porsche in Bournemouth. Excellent service.

Hi,

Would anybody recommend a specialist to do a Pre-purchase inspection?
I have already read one bad experience even after a PPI on this forum so want to make sure I get it done by someone with a big reputation for Porsche.

Also, could anybody shed some light on what they actually check?

Finally, how much is it likely to cost?

Thanks in advance.
Peter Morgan is the name that usually comes up.

From my experience of a (Ferrari) PPI, it's basically a very thorough MOT done by a person who knows the car inside out, its weak spots, knows what to look for and can give you an overall opinion on the condition of the car relative to its peers/price and any remedial that should/might need doing in the near future. They'll take it for a road test to make sure it drives right, and a compression test can be offered as an option. All this is then written up and given to you so you have a record. What I found invaluable though was actually being there while the person was doing it so I could quiz them and generally pick their brains for advice.

Mine took about 3.5hrs to do, including a compression test, and cost £400 all in including about 2hrs worth of travelling for the person that did it.

FWIW, I'll probably not buy another performance car ever again without one.

I would recommend arranging with teh seller to take it to the nearest Porsche specialist to them.

The benefit of this is that the specialist will have a ramp and will be able to perform a thorough inspection with easy access to all necessary tools and diagnostic equipment. If they also happen to be local to you, you can always use them for the servicing as well. Look at the pinned thread at the top of the forum for a list of indepebdent Porsche specialist

Personally i would use Peter Morgan above most OPC checks. His checks are more thorough and since its been his bread and butter for 20+ years, he is going to have better knowledge than a 22 year old mechanic.

He has undertaken a couple of inspections for me, been great both times...

I used Peter Morgan Consulting when I purchased my 993 (as did the previous owner). The inspection was carried out by Gordon Wingrove, who is an acknowledged marque expert.

I received a comprehensive bound report inc. HPI check with lots of supporting photographic evidence and spoke to Gordon on the phone after the inspection (I was at work on the day they carried out the inspection at the vendors location). He said he inspected a car occasionally that he wished he could buy himself and this was one of them!

I have recommended their services many times to prospective purchasers. Great service

Edit: forgot to say they cover your location. Give Peter a call - he'll talk you through the process and is a very affable guy.

Worth asking what happens if he misses something important. Does he pay any compensation, have any insurance for the inspection? Nothing against PM (although I was unimpressed with a report of his I read), but it's a question I'll be asking anyone who does a PPI for me in future.

PPI are great but the people doing them are human and make mistakes. I had one done from one of the reputable inspection companies who visited the car at the dealer. The inspection missed a few minor things that the dealer put right anyway as they occurred within 3 months - as per statutory rights.

There was a major thing missed that surfaced after 2 years and I got all my money back from the inspection company.

Whilst it buys you peace of mind, don’t rely on it blindly.
