Has anyone got advice on how to modify the luggage compartment on a 993 to make it more user-friendly? Mine has a multi-CD player fitted in it to complicate matters, and getting to anything under the 'carpet' is not easy.
Apologies if this has been discussed many times before, but I'm a newish owner of a 993 and need advice!
It may be that there's a firm somewhere that does this sort of work?

You could move the changer fairly easily yourself and put it into the well formed by the middle of the spare wheel, leaving the luggage space entirely free.

Chuck the carpet and the CD player out. Fit a nice looking strut brace, keep the tool roll and emergency bits elsewhere, and enjoy a lighter more friendly partner!

Not having driven a 993 with a strut brace fitted in this area, I'd appreciate a comment on what it would achieve (in the real world, as opposed to on a track day).

Generally speaking, sod all difference in the real world; possible increase in understeer on track if the mod is made on its own.

Thanks for the various comments - I'll have to experiment! It's strange, though, that Porsche didn't see fit to make a neater job of that area. I'm not complaining - who'd complain about something as wonderful as a 993! - but just rather surprised.

I took my 10CD changer out about a year ago to put some luggage in, and never put it back in again! At home, I have all CDs (about 750) on a server linked via a wireless network to an Audiotron in the living room for playback on the audio system. This means I can locate and play any track in seconds, or play randomly by genre, artist etc, and this has somewhat diminished my enthusiasm for choosing 10 CDs in advance to listen to in the car.

I bought an MP3-compatible changer-- now I choose which 50 CDs to put in the car. There are other ways too...

Was it easy to remove? I must confess I haven't looked at doing that yet. I've only had the car a few weeks and, not having had a multi-CD player in a car before, I have been enjoying the extra musical options available.
That said, the player itself does take up an awful lot of room and certainly makes it difficult to get the 'carpet' up.
manek suggested putting it in the well, but again, I haven't yet looked into whether that's feasible with a player this size - on the face of it, it looks unlikely, and I suppose there might also be a problem of anchoring it securely.
To be honest, I'd hoped that someone might have come up with a modification to the carpet lining arrangement that made it easier to use, but I've not yet had a 'bite'.

Steve-P, when you say diminished your enthusiasm for listening in the car, does that mean you have no playback device in the car, or have you found an in-car alternative to the CD changer?. Like Tarka, i want to bin the big cumbersome CD changer.

ipod and a cradle.

20gb, great sound quality, and you get to carry it around with you. Easy.

Topstuff: The iPod, a few questions if you have the time. how much did it set you back, including fitting?, inlcluding fittting, etc. Also, where do you have the cradle mounted in the car?, do they need to 'rewire', does it make mess?, i have a 993 with sony a pullout panel.

Now that's a great idea! I've had an iPod ever since they first came out, but have used it very little. I thought I'd use it when travelling/commuting, but couldn't get used to it for some reason. Nonetheless, it's a super bit of equipment and it would be much more convenient than having to keep swapping CDs.
Any info on how to go about this (same Sony ICE as Veewhy) would be much appreciated.

There isn't really an alternative right now, unless you want a separate player such as the iPod or Creative Jukebox bolted in your car somewhere, which I don't. They are great for the plane, but not very usable in the car. I'm sure it's just a question of time before someone gets a ticket for trying to find a track on their portable player while driving. Sony do make a ridiculously expensive head unit with a hard drive built in, but being Sony, the drive is too small, and it uses their proprietary crappy format which frankly is not very good (especially if you already have 60GB of files in another format). So, I'm still waiting for the right solution. But I'm sure all the ICE manufacturers must have something in the pipeline by now.
