It is pretty easy to set it up so that you can jump in your car, take the ipod out of your pocket and get it wired into your ICE.

You need an Aux socket in your stereo.
The Apple website has cradles and power sockets , as well as tacky converters that you put in the tape deck.
Much better is to get the ipod into a belkin cradle ( on the Apple site ) , plugged into the Aux line on the head unit in your car. Power can either come from a cigarette lighter socket or you can wire the cradle into the stereo. The Mini2 website has lots of pictures and guides as to how to do it.
Alpine have just launched a head unit which is ipod controllable - the face unit will control your ipod.
I have a cradle and line into the aux plug on the stereo of my Cooper S. The ipod happens to wedge in nicely into the cupholder.
You'll need a cradle affair for the 993 I suspect - 996 might have a suitable cubby hole.
But it works ! And it is very cool.

Well mine's all right..got one of the first of the new models. No problems.
And in the car its got a power source.
Oh - and the battery IS replaceable.
Apple will sell you for £30 and you can get at the back with a small screwdriver..
The battery thing is something of an urban myth...

That looks good. What's the range like though, I mean, could you just hide it in the glovebox along with the player, and it would work OK with a screen aerial? With an external aerial? Presumably, since it expects a headphone input rather than line level input, it would work with any player, for example a Creative Jukebox Zen which has lots of advantages (cheaper than iPod, 60GB hard drive, 14 hour play per charge, cheap spare batteries, better format support, not made by Apple, etc).

should be I tried it at opposite ends of the house (40m+) and it worked fine, no signal loss.
It expects a headphone input, so any musical device should work.

I guess the difference is that a car is a steel cage. If you've ever tried to use a portable FM radio inside a car, it generally doesn't work very well, so perhaps it might be problematic transmitting to an external aerial. However, it sounds worth pursuing, because I could use such a system in both cars. What's the battery life like?

But this is a portable FM transmitter not a receiver , so having the transmitter near the bit of the aerial that goes into the back of the car radio would def. be enough to give good reception. That's a guess mind.

Glad you got the new model, as the old ones were being charged $259 for replacement batteries from Apple, sorry m8, it's not myth, class action lawsuits are on the go stateside. With many campaigns forcing a change of heart from Apple.
