Difference Between Porsche GT2 and GT3?

Gt3 races at Le mans 24h,
Gt2 in the Nurburgring 24h
Isn't it the GT3 Cup, Cup R and RSR that race at both Le Mans and in the LMS and ALMS, with the addition of a one off GT3 RS in the VLN and N24 races. Gt2 in the Nurburgring 24h
I think the last GT2 to race was the 993 GT2, but somebody will probably correct me.

I believe that's right. The homologation intent was originally there but was abandoned for Porsche Motorsport to focus on GT3 customer racing. The GT2 name is now only maintained for marketing purposes.Edited by GT Glee on Wednesday 12th May 14:19

Correct me if I’m wrong, please, but isn’t there a really simple difference that nobody has mentioned yet? The number of driven wheels?
The GT2 is a rear wheel drive turbocharged car.
The GT3 is a four wheel drive naturally-aspirated car.
Don't wanna be too mean to you but seriously, you drive a 944 turbo so its fair to assume you're an enthusiast & know something about porsches, yet you think that the GT3 is 4wd ?? The GT2 is a rear wheel drive turbocharged car.
The GT3 is a four wheel drive naturally-aspirated car.
Don't wanna be antagonistic dude, but wtf ?!!

GT2 is fast Turbo road car, less precise.
GT3 is scalpel sharp track focused weapon.
Guess which one I have??
I'd rather be less precise but half a mile down the road infront GT3 is scalpel sharp track focused weapon.
Guess which one I have??

I get exactly what you're saying. On paper the GT2 and 3 look very similar suspension wise so you'd expect the difference to be small. The reality is very different, my GT2 is setup for fast road/track use so it's closer to a GT3 than standard but it still feels worlds apart from the GT3 RS I had a passenger ride in a few weeks ago, it really felt like it was on rails.

Do miss the rush of a Turbo car, nothing quite like it.
Will be interesting to see how the GT2RS compares with GT3RS, is it aimed at the same customers?

Cup R and RSR (its predecessor) are meant for higher-budget entrants. They have better aero, suspension, engine, gearbox, electronics than Cup car. Buying and running one will cost maybe 2.5x as much as a Cup.
The 993 GT2 was the last turbo Porsche to come from the factory in a racing car version. Nonetheless, some people took 996 RSRs (technically, Rs and RSs, but we don't need to go there) and put the turbo engine into them. A few years ago at the 'ring, both Alzen and Manthey were pretty successful doing this, although there were problems relating to tyre and gearbox reliability. In time, Manthey and then Alzen went to normally-aspirated and had considerable success.

The 997 GT3 R is the successor to the Cup S. It is used in the VLN because the regulators have castrated the RSR and as a result the R is a better prospect.
The RSR is used in the ACO sanctioned series (LMS and ALMS) and Le Mans. It is Porsche's GT2 class entry.

Or with a quick change of springs and dampers they are both as focused, one just has a significant amount more power....GT3 is scalpel sharp track focused weapon.

Most of the suspension components are shared between the cars so it's more setup and rates than a fundamental car difference as a few GT3's that have been out with my RUF GT2 will confirm, it's just as quick and accurate in the corners but vanishes as soon as the corner opens out... standard they are a little softer and more road focused than the GT3 but a world away from the turbo
