Just looked at the rsj website, if your budget can stretch and you don't mind lhd, they have a 2001 996TT lhd, with 22k miles for ~£55k. Seems good value?

How long do the assembled experts think it will take for the RHD 996TT's to get to the prices that the RHD 993TT's are at now?

Presumably about 4 years or so looking at the depreciation of the 993TT...

I think that about 6-7 years is closer the mark. The 996TT is a far more common machine, and therefore supply will never be a problem as there is only ever a handful of good 993TTs on the market at any one time. But as far as long term values are concerned the 993TT being the last of the air cooled 'pure' 911s, will become a better long term bet.

I have been thinking about this lately too

The cheapest straight rhd 996TT I have seen is in the current issue of Top Marques; a W-plate with 60K mikes with FOPCSH, for approx. £57K in a private sale...thats £7-10k away from mint late 993TT prices, and on a par with 993 Turbo S prices.

There is a crashed / repaired 996TT in TM too; an X-plate for approx. £52K IIRC.

What do those in the trade / more knowledgeable think?

Thanks

Martyn.

2nd part of a two part question, not wanting to start an argument...

Which is the better car?

...objectively, it's the 996TT without a doubt - in almost every conceivable measure.

However, the air-cooled brigade will go on about diluted character, rawness...blah...blah....blah.

The 996TT is definitely a better car. No doubt about it.

BUT, it depends on your needs. The joy of the TT is its sheer competence and "use it in all weathers" flexibility.

Given a sunny day and no-where in particular to go, however, and a sports exhaust-kitted 993 Turbo would probably be my choice for a hoon..and therefore it makes a more enjoyable second car IMO.

I have been spending an unhealthy anount of time thinking about this recently. I saw a decent 996 TT in Top Marques for 63 grand, not crashed, manual, normal miles. I recon in 2 years they will be in the low 50's (privately). This is when I will strike!!

I have a 993TT and my friend (who lets me drive it) has a 996TT so hopefully I can give a balanced view. The answer is not staightforward and it depends on what you want:

1) Low Depreciation: 993TT
2) Modern Interior: 996TT
3) Power: I can't tell the difference
4) Looks: A matter of opinion
5) Creature Comforts: 996TT
6) Technology: 996TT
7) Involving drive: 993TT
8) Build quality: 993TT

Personally, I would rather a 996TT because I prefer the more modern interior and the creature comforts but could not justify spending the extra money knowing that in a few years time the two cars would be worth the same or dare I say the 993TT would be worth more?

The RSJ RH one is a possibility although I would prefer a 96 or 97 model.(spoke to them a couple of days ago re a later one.)
The other 996 is LHD and I am definite that I want RHD.

Marlow Cars have an Arena Red/Marble Leather one with 15K on, but its top money at around £47K

Interesting about the 996TT/993TT debate. I had been in both as a passenger but not on an exactly fair footing. The 993 had been somewhat breathed on.

Both truly marvellous machines it has to be said.

That's the one I brought although I paid somewhat less than the asking price. Very nice it is too. I got it checked over by Sutton Coldfield OPC who knocked the price of the inspection (£200) off the price of the Waranty (£1000). They found a list of minor things which will need doing at some stage. All of which helped beat the price down a little further.

As for the debate 993TT vs 996TT I've driven a number of each recently and have to conclude I made this right choice. But there's not that much in it either way. Certainly in terms of dynamics the other stuff is all very subjective.

Shame about the pimpish interior. Also it's an import, albeit RHD, so provenance isn't as blond haired and blue eyed as some.

'ow does thee know its an import?

Insider knowledge or something obvious externally?

Almost perfect apart from the interior and the price. Damn it!

Congratulations, a very keenly priced motor. You did the right thing buying a warranty.
It really is one hell of a car for around 60K.

Dave,

Lockyear Cars (www.seanlockyear.co.uk)have a 97P 993 TT for which they are asking £44800. It's black, RHD, 67K miles and has the factory power upgrade to 430BHP.
