Thinking about getting a car to replace my RS4(B5) and have been looking at a porsche 996tt.

Only problem is my garage is full of toys and my driveway is open onto a main road and was wondering whether having a 911 on the drive is inviting any thieving scum to come and steal it/scratch it !

Have had no problems leaving my RS4 on the drive (touch wood)but to most people it just looks like an A4 estate with big wheels !

Any thoughts be appreciated.

I would have thought you would have same problems with RS4 as you would with a 996TT.

Crims love the space of an estate and would all know exactly what an RS4 is.

Is it a gated driveway?

No it's not gated, unfortunately.

Was thinking more of the opportunistic crims rather than the car-jackers. Seeing a Porsche sitting there might tempt to have a look inside the house if you know what I mean !

if you can afford a 996tt ... you can afford a gate surely ?

depends where you live and how long the driveway - mine is on the drive and the insurance is cheaper with it there than if it was in the garage - never had a problem, but I do live on a relatively quiet street with the car about 30ft from the road

Here's the problem, Driveway is about 1 1/2 car length's long and has a footpath next to it, there is no room for a gate.

lots of gates open outwards onto the footpath... majority of drives couldn't open with a car on them if they opened inwards

If you can afford a 996tt, you can afford a proper house, Shirley?

Would love to buy a new house, just don't want to give the government another £11,000 (as having moved only 3 yrs ago)

Believe me there is no way a gate would fit on the drive, (first of all it would look flucking stupid!) and have no idea why this was moved to the porsche forum !

Depends on the area you live in.

Many londoners with flash cars park theirs on the road (reluctantly, probably)

Install a camera on your drive along with a small (these premises are under CCTV surveillance) sign visible to anyone approaching the car.

I did this with mine, it was discreet yet offered a little extra peace of mind.

You can pick up a small CCTV camera from B&Q for next to nothing.

get a HD one with infra red if you actually want usable footage though

the cameras no use if it just records them smashing the st out of your P&J but their faces all just appear as pasty white blobs with no detail.

well unless of course you live in CSI - world where they can just enhance anything from and to any resolution they want lol

The idea of the camera is more deterrent than anything else. A determined thief will not be deterred by either camera or garage. The opportunist thief may well think twice at the sight of a camera.

I drive past a house every morning in South London with a 996Turbo on it's smallish drive. I think as it's a few generations old now there's less problems.

Good luck can help though.
