Hey Guys,

(fantastic help on my last topic - thanks people)

I need to get a baby seat for my Boxster. Porsche insists that I need an Air-bag Deactivation Kit (£165), and then purchase the seat (£427 for 9m-2yrs).

Is there any possibility that I can purchase a baby seat this without spending almost £600? I don't want to compromise on safety, but surely there must be other brands/options other than Porsche seat?

Advise please.

The price they are quoting for the seat is ridiculous - go on to the Britax and Maxi-Cosi web sites - they have tools to let you search for which of their seats will fit in which car (but a word of caution). Go somewhere like halfords and try the seat out in your car - last weekend we went to buy a seat to put in my wife's car - Britax website said it would fit but when it was in the car it was shocking and immediately returned.

You might well have to get the air bag de-activated by Porsche though.

I was in the same situation with my GT3 and Mercedes they both try and stiff you for an own branded version of a Britax product, after much research once i understood how the Porsche system works i got Porsche to fit the airbag deactivator kit(very simple buckle and sensor) and program the ECU. I then bought one of these http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_baby... i got mine for £10 these ones are £15.50

The buckle just tells the ECU that a child is in the seat and switches off the passenger airbag. You know its working because once plugged in the airbag light flashes 10 times each time you turn the key. The Porsche baby seat just contains this buckle attched buy a strap apart from that its the same as the strap is not in tension,.

I have GT3 seats so went for a britax rokatot as it fitted best but go and see which baby seat fits best in the car. any reputable shop will let you try them in the carpark and show you how they should fit.

Maybe this will help i bought a the latest maxi cosi (side protection one, can't remember the name), and i've got a graco which my daughter of 3 loves. Both of these fit perfectly in the back of my 966. Though not as snug as i'd like, but good enough to be secure.

Only issue is leg room which you won't have an issue with. As mentioned previously drive down to Halfords/John Lewis and ask them to try before you buy. Oh and take your child with you, i made the mistake of not and got the leg room woefully wrong frown

What year is you're boxster?

The best thing you can do is take the car to you're nearest Halfords or Mothercare store & try them all until one fits. The staff in both these stores are trained & will hopefully find you something that will fit & safe.

Porsche will always suggest buying from them because they make a huge amount of money out of this yet their seats are probably no safer than an alternative.

I have a cayman and am expecting a baby in 8 weeks. I brought the maxi cosi seat which fits fine (£95) but the cost of airbag deactivation is £500 (I had this amount quoted by both OPC Reading and Byfleet). I assume your boxster doesn't have this so you will have to get this retro fitted before you can put a baby in the front seat so you'll have to pay out £500 one way or the other.

BTW - am fed up with Porsche labour costs so have decided to draw a line under this and am now selling my car so if you happen to come up with a cheaper solution I'd love to hear it!

As the OP said the parts cost about £175 but then you have to pay porsche to install which is where you get hit. Apparantly it takes 2.1 hrs (!!) and this pushes the overall cost up to £500.

So they don't have a ON/OFF switch like most other cars?

Pretty pethetic if you ask me.

@Lightweight

Would you mind re-posting your link as it doesn't seem to be working?

I have a 996 and I'm planning on buying the seat-belt buckle cross member kit. Like others here I don't want to buy the Porsche baby seat and looking to source a seat belt insert that will fit into the seat belt kit or a baby seat with the correct seat belt insert

Chances are that after 12 years the website has slightly changed, the product isn’t available any more.
