Can you make a 996TT RWD?
Discussion
Bit of a bizzare question (and it might be considered sacriledge) but can you disconnect the front diff on a 996 turbo therefore making it RWD only? I know it can be done on Lambos so thereotically it can be done on Porsches?
The reason I ask is there seems to be a couple of high powered Turbos for sale currently and I thought rather than buying a GT2 one could turn one of these Turbos into effectively a (RWD) GT2?
Cheers

Yep it can be done pretty easily. Stevo has done it to his car. The reason I ask is there seems to be a couple of high powered Turbos for sale currently and I thought rather than buying a GT2 one could turn one of these Turbos into effectively a (RWD) GT2?

Begs the question why tho. Just get a GT2 !

Money...?By the time you've thrown money at the conversion, suspension, remap, brakes, bucket seats & cage to make it more like a GT2, you'll have spent too much already and end up with a car you'll never be able to sell.
False economy imo. If you want a cheap GT2 get a high miles car or a good catD.
As ZeroH says it's so easy, if done fully will reduce the weight of the car by about 75kg. Makes the Car slightly quicker.........but why do it.
It is not going to make your car a GT2, not by a very long way just a RWD 996TT.
Have a look on the 6speed forum. There are lots of posts about it. Its one of those controversial topics where no one is right and no one is wrong.
I personally like my car AWD. But each to their own.

Remember there is no LSD in the back of a turbo but there is in a GT2. I really don't think a one wheel drive 420 hp car is a sensible thing!
As Miras says if you are minded to convert to RWD then you will probably want to do all the things he has listed. Adding a LSD to a turbo has got to be the thick end of £2k. So with all the other 'upgrades' you are close to GT2 money.

Small bit of advice, but sure most of you know this anyway!
If I could turn back the clock yes I would have gone GT2, the problem was I purchased a 996TT to use around town as I live close to Edinburgh City centre (it's seriously mad traffic here)... I used to do a lot of track days many years ago and never did it enter my head about tracking the Turbo, that was until I was invited to a freebie at Knockhill (BIG MISTAKE)
As most of the members here, you get attached to your car, start modding it and keep going so it was difficult to part with at the time. Yes I have spent an obscene amount of money but it brings me great pleasure when I drive it. Think the big difference is that I have never looked at the car with a price on it's head, I don't plan to sell it and it will stay in the family for many years to come, that's provided I have the funds and it sticks to the Black stuff (knock on wood)
