Gearbox problems already
Discussion
Oh well, the fun has started...
Have done about 300 miles in the 911E, and I've had my first minor disaster...
Had a few funny noises from the gearbox the otherday on my way down to Reading, and some problems getting it into gear. At the same time, felt like the handbrake was dragging a little, but nothing I really worried about.
Went away for a week, got the car back out of the garage and again, felt like the handbrake hadn't released. So I thought I'd take it up the road opposite just to free it up. Got 100 metres up the road, doing about 25mph when the rear wheels locked solid.
Called the AA etc, we played around with it and found the it was basically stuck in gear, and not letting the engine drive - all seized up. Took it down to the local garage in Reading, and got them to look it at. Turns out there was no oil in the gearbox, and doesn't look like there has been in some time. Great.
They are now suggesting either we re-build it, or I look for another second-hand one to drop in. So, anyone any advice on this? Does anyone know of a 5 speed box for a 1969 911 E sitting around for sale? I believe it is the 901 type I am looking for, but as the car was converted from Sportmatic, they may have fitted a later version.
Does anyone know how difficult it is to fit a later version in? For example a G50?
Be grateful for any help!

The good news is that the box that was in it should be cheap second hand. It will be cheaper getting one than rebuilding the old one I should think.
A G50 upgrade is a good idea if it will fit and work with the engine.

Isn't the 901 a 4 speed?
Throw a 915 in it - more of those about secondhand and I think they'll be much cheaper than a G50 (which also brings the aggro of hydraulics into the equation).
But it's hard to tell the quality of a 'box when it's removed from a car and the 915s are notorious for flaky synchro on 2nd and 3rd, so be careful - you won't be able to tell how good it is until you've bolted engine and 'box back in the car. Given this, make sure you source it from a reputable company and insist on them giving you written evidence that they'll take it back if it's stuffed, or else go to a specialist and get them to quote for the whole job, including supplying the 'box, that way they bear the loss if the 'box is no good (and therefore absorb the labour costs in refitting a replacement).
didn't I tell you to get a decent inspection before buying the car...although I'd be willing to bet that few would have checked the gerbox oil level

Cheers Dom
I've had 2 quotes come up so far:
£850 for a secondhand one from a breakers (don't know full details on condition, but apparently OK), and £1495 for one out of a car which has apparently completed only 19 miles since a 40k rebuild (guy wrapped it around a tree after just 19 miles. How gutted would you be?)

True about the inspection...
I actually took it down to Tower Porsche to get it done, but in the end they said it wasn't worth doing a full inspection and we only put it up on the ramp and played around with it.
They had serviced the car in the past, and had known the previous owner for 3 years, so said at the money it was a sound buy and they would vouch for it (at that age they said the main thing was the chassis and bodywork, which I kind of agree on).
Seemed like it was worth taking their advice at the time, now wish I had insisted on doing a full inspection, but as you say, it might not have pulled that up.
Anyhow, I had a budget of £2k to get things sorted when I bought it, just hadn't banked on the gearbox eating up most of it straight away!
