Sorry for double posting but I have only had one response from the general forum...
I took my Boxster to a 'Porsche specialist' for a service and to look at a knocking from the front of the car ?suspension. They found various other bits of service type work oil seals / coils / etc. which I agreed to them doing. The knocking was diagnosed as coming from the lower ball joints so they were replaced and as 3 shocks were worn it was only marginally more expensive to renew the whole suspension (shocks / springs / bars). I picked it up today five weeks and over £3.4k later and drove it 70 miles home. The knocking sound has not resolved and it has now developed a chirping noise whenever the throttle is pressed (relative to engine speed I think)and it has just dropped a load of engine coolant over the car park at work (typically on nights).
Any suggestions?
edited to say i'm at tethers end with this...I only got four hours sleep yesterday so I could go and pick it up and am about to start a 12 hour night shift and I have spent nearly £200 on taxis this week getting to work as the collection day kept getting put back every day...

Had a chat with them this morning...
They think that it may have been overfilled with coolant and the drive back caused it to expand and blow out onto the road and onto the polyrib belt causing the squeak. It got me home without melting the engine. They suggest monitoring it and seeing how it goes.
Sounds a reaonable explanation.
Thanks very much for the replies though it was a worrying night!
